  2. Mission The Combined Band will conduct transition training beginning on 25 February 2013 and ending 04 May 2013 in order to prepare the Combined Band for a successful 2013-2014 school year.

  3. Mission Essential Task List • Select next year’s leadership positions • Develop Leadership skills of all classes • Transition the junior, sophomore, and freshmen classes into their positions for next year • Establish standard operating procedures • Build teams

  4. Timeline

  5. Timeline

  6. Weekly Focuses • Different focus every week • Tailor training to the weekly focus • Utilize the afternoons for effective transition training • STT idea: transition training/leadership development…

  7. Leadership Selections • All positions will be interviewed (from MUC to Signal Corporal) • No “doubling up” of duties • Everyone will have a position • We have enough people • Platoon advisors • Position priority will be sent down from CBS • Selection timeline subject to change as information comes down from the OOC and Corps Staff

  8. Leadership Development • Transitioning starts with Class of 2014 • Each class will be transitioned and mentored by the class before it • Freshmen will have four (4) leadership discussions to develop leadership skills • There is more to transitioning than bag-making • Devote time and effort in training to develop your people from all classes

  9. Freshman Leadership Discussions • See timeline for dates • 14 APR: All new 1SG and PSG attend • Discussion Materials: • 22 MAR: “The Academy” episodes 1-4 • 28 MAR: “The Academy” episodes 5-8 • 04 APR: “The Academy” episodes 9-11 • 14 APR: MCRD and Cadet Reception

  10. Freshman Leadership Discussions • Proctors of Discussion • New MUC/SGM/CDRs (if announced) • Current SGM/1SGs • Collective discussion and small, mixed groups • Topic of Discussion: • Positive/Negative leadership styles/techniques • Effective training styles • Training vs. Mentoring • Proper Attitude • Differences in Missions

  11. Transitioning (Juniors and Sophomores) • Beginning 18 MAR: Senior class instructs, guide, and assist juniors in taking over as executive leaders • Beginning 07 APR: Junior class fully transitioned, instructs, guides, and assists sophomores in becoming “indirect” leaders

  12. Transitioning (Freshmen) • Beginning 18 MAR: Freshmen can begin transition training • Training topics (in order of importance): • Leadership development • Team building • The “switch” • Instruction on Corps Items

  13. Write Standard Operating Procedures • CBS will write first draft 27 MAR-07 APR • First drafts will be distributed upon completion • CBS will NOT dictate each individual position • IT IS UP TO YOUR UNIT TO MAKE YOURSELVES SUCCEED IN ALL AREAS • CBS/Units will have ONE SOP for next year

  14. Team Building • Horizontal and Vertical • Operate as a UNIT, not classes or individuals • Hierarchy is important, but… • Everyone carries weight on the team • Team success requires 100% cooperation • A head without a body goes nowhere • A body without a head goes about as far

  15. Transition Training Recap • Ten Weeks Long • Encompasses leadership selection, development, transitioning, and training • Endstate • Have all SOPs written • All positions selected • All personnel well trained in their duties for the next year • Seamless transition to the Class of 2014
