  2. Electrons • The arrangement of electrons in an atom helps determine the properties and behavior of that atom

  3. Electrons have special rules…. • Electrons live in something called energy levels. • Only so many electrons can be in any energy level. • The electrons in the outer most energy level of any element are called valance electrons.

  4. Nucleus Contains protons & neutrons 1st energy level Can hold up to 2 electrons 2nd energy level Can hold up to 8 electrons 3rd energy level Can hold up to 8 electrons

  5. Atomic Models • This is the Bohr model. In this model, the nucleus is orbited by electrons, which are in different energy levels.

  7. The Wave Model • According to the current atomic model, electrons do not move about an atom in a definite path, like the planets around the sun. • Electron clouds rather than orbits • Electron clouds are a space where the electrons are likely to be found.
