  1. Valence Electrons • Def: the electrons in an atom’s outermost orbitals (usually the highest principal energy level) • Write the noble-gas configurations for: • Sulfur • Cesium • Francium • The “leftover” electrons are the valence electrons!!!

  2. Valence Electrons (cont.) • Valence electrons are important in the formation of chemical bonds between atoms. • They are represented visually by using electron-dot diagrams. • Table 5-5, p.140 • Examples on the board.
