Sublimation Printing • Printing process that uses heat to transfer dye onto medium materials such as a plastic card, paper, or fabric • Dye transitions between the solid and gas states without going through a liquid stage • Conversion is initiated by heat and controlled with pressure and time • Hard items such as ceramic, fiber board, metals, etc. requires a special coating to accept the sublimation inks
The heat transfer paper does not have a coating, but a special finish on the surface so the ink doesn’t soak into the paper • After the transfer paper is printed on, it is placed on the product and applied with a heat press
Computer Generated Graphics • Images should be made in Photoshop/Illustrator • It is ILLEGAL to take someone else’s work directly from the Internet • Be creative and make or manipulate images so that they are your own idea
Printer Configurations • Images must be configured to print reversed/mirrored for all substrates • This should be done in Photoshop/Illustrator • Image should be printed on whitest side of sublimation paper
Heat Transfer • Heat press needs to preheat to desired temp (400 degrees) • Check tension of press and adjust if needed • Image contact should be tight on/around substrate • Get heating times from instructor for various substrates • Remove substrate from press and allow to cool • SUBSTRATE WILL BE HOT
