  2. The main function of this act is to set standards to ensure that safe workplaces are being provided. The act calls for employers to adopt certain practices or methods to protect workers. Employers must also eliminate hazards in the workplace such as exposure to toxic chemicals, extreme noise levels, mechanical dangers or unsanitary work conditions. The act can affect environmental issues by covering employees in fields such as manufacturing, construction, long shoring, agriculture and disaster relief. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is in charge or regulating and enforcing this act.
