  2. Class composition • 2nd yr 3rd yr • Sch. of Science • Sch. of Engg • Sch of Business & Mgmt. • As it turns out there are a large % of B&M students in section 1, but large % of Science and Engg students in L2 and a even mix in L3.

  3. Course Overview • Impact of : • Engineer & Technology on society • Context and tools for analysis • How does this look from different perspectives? • Society? Organization? Individual? • Practical approaches to ethical dilemmas • use interdisciplinary approach • examine the implications of actions of • society, organization and individual • Examples from Asia and the West

  4. Your objectives for the course • Good course • organized, useful reading materials • Other illustrations • such as videos, visual aids, etc. • My preparation, • good explanations, interesting, enthusiastic • you feel like you are part of the class • Appropriate • difficulty,workload, exams

  8. Grading • 35% Two midterms (15%, 20%) • 15% Homework - 3 group assignments • 35% Final exam • 15% Class participation • in class QOTD (Questions of the Day) • night exams • October 9, 6:30-8pm • November 16 6:30-8pm • review before exams, cancel some lectures

Format for homeworks • Work in groups of 3 or 4 • students choose who they will work with • Given : a problem (society or organizational) • one week to complete • 2 page write-up including answers to : • what are your decisions and conclusions? • what are the implications of your decisions? • how did you make this decision? • what logic, steps procedures did you use? • what difficulties were encountered?

  10. announcements • In class exercise (QOTD): groups can change • For homework, groups will finalized sometime during week 3 • All 3 homeworks will have a written portion of the assignment (1-2 pages) • Your group will have a choice of 2 of 3 lessons in which to do a short oral part (1-2 minutes).

If you had $1 Million HKD, what would you do with it? • for this introductory class, to get the class participation point, please write your answer for Q.2 at home and bring it with you to class. You and the people you are sitting with today do not need to work together this time, but you will in the future. Please write your names on the sheet you turn in on Friday if you do not all work together this time.)
