WHY WILL YOU VISIT THE ASC? • To enhance college-level skills for achievement of ACADEMIC SUCCESS • To maximize learning through utilization of the center’s resources and services We are what we repeatedly do.   4. DURING THIS ORIENTATION, YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT • ASC’s services and resources • Signing in/out process • ASC printing procedure • Useful information for Daytona State College students • Resources for specific courses

  5. SERVICES And RESOURCES

  6. LEARNING SPECIALISTS • Have a working knowledge of academic technology and multimedia programs • Assist students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds • Possess the credentials and expertise to provide assistance one-to-one or in groups • Provide students with resource materials to inspire independent learning

  7. TUTORING SERVICES Professional and peer tutors are available each semester. Each campus maintains a tutoring schedule, so please inquire for subject and time availability. Math group-learning sessions are held weekly in the ASC at the Daytona Beach campus. All tutoring is FREE and available on a walk-in basis.

  8. FACULTY INVOLVEMENT Daytona State College faculty & staff visit the center regularly to assist students. Many of our faculty and staff use the center for exam review sessions and other academic related activities.

  9. DESKTOP and other RESOURCES The ASC’s computer desktops will give you access to helpful tutorial software and useful information in various subjects. In addition, please look for. News Media folder– directs you to major national and global newspaper and magazine websites. Dictionary folder– allows you to search for definitions in different disciplines including English (and other languages, mathematics, medical science, and others. Academic Software includes Interact Math, Keyboarding Pro, Editor (installed upon request), and many more . . . Handouts are available for subjects such as math and English.

  10. SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI) Peer-assisted study sessions for students enrolled in more difficult classes: Anatomy & Physiology, College Algebra, and more . . . . VOCATIONAL PREPATORY INSTRUCTION (VPI) Available on all Daytona State College campuses VPI Student and Scott Metzger • Helps students enrolled in career and technical programs meet entry-level and program certification requirements • Provides self-paced instruction in basic skills, workforce readiness, and study strategies

  12. THE SIGN-IN PROCESS ALLstudents are required to sign-in prior to using the ASC’s computers and study resources.

  13. THE RECEPTION DESK Sign in at one of the reception-desk computers at the entrance to the Academic Support Center. The ASC maintains a reserve of resources including headsets, calculators, dictionaries, study videos, and textbooks that can be checked out for use in the ASC. Ask first-impression clerks to check-out these items.

  14. SHOULD YOU ALWAYS SIGN-IN? YES – signing in is requiredfor use of the Academic Support Center. This is the best way to keep track of your hours electronically.

  15. PLEASE REMEMBER . . . • You cannot sign-in for one class and have the time counted for another. • If you plan on working on multiple labs, sign-out and sign back in for another class. • Your username and password only work for one station at a time; sign-out when done with assignments.

  16. USERNAME & PASSWORD Username: Student ID # Password: Your Daytona State College “FalconNet” Pin If you have not accessed your falconet account, the password will default to the mmddyy format of your birthday.

  17. REMEMBER TO LOG OFF You must click the BLUE “LOGOFF” icon on the desktop to end your computer session. If you don’t click the BLUE “LOGOFF” icon, you may not be able to log on to another other Campus computer the same day!

  18. THE ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER’S PRINTING PROCEDURE

  19. TO USE THE ASC’s PRINTER . . . • Purchase a Blue Card for $1.00 from the vending machine at the ASC or the library • You must add money to the Blue Card at any vending machine • Printing costs 10 cents ($0.10) per page Remember to put your name on the back of the card.

  20. PC PRINTING SYSTEM • Go to “File” and select “Print”; or simply click on the “Printer” icon. • A Box (as shown on the left) will appear. Type an Identifier (SSN#, nickname, student id, etc.) in the box labeled as “Client ID.” • Select “Print Document

  21. PROCEED TO THE PRINTER Ask a learning specialist for the location of the ASC’s printer and copier.

  22. RETRIEVING YOUR PRINT JOB 1 • Simply go to the “print • release station” • (computer) located to the • right of the printer, then • insert your Blue Card into • the card reader. • Next, type your identifier • (“Client ID”) here • Then, click “OK”

  23. RETRIEVING YOUR PRINT JOB 2 • Click on your print job to • select the item(s) you • wish to print. • Select “print document” • or other options, i.e., • “delete document” or • “quit/end,” etc.

  24. PLEASE NOTE . . . Academic Support Center computers ERASE ALL ITEMS saved to the hard drives (and other changes made to the computer) each evening. Purchase a disk or USB portable storage drive to save your work .

  27. REMEMBER TO STAY ON TASK Computer games and Web surfing can be relaxing and fun; however, your Academic Support Center lab time is class time. Academic Support Center computers are foracademic use only.* *Please refer to Computer Network and Internet Acceptable Use Policy in your Student Handbook, pages 4 and 5.

NECESSARY REMINDERS • No snacks, drinks, open containers or bottles are allowed in the center. • Children are not allowed in the ASC for their own safety and to maintain a study-friendly environment. • Please silence or turn off cell phone(s) upon entering the center.
