  3. AIDET • AIDET is a acronym, used at MGMC for patient and visitor interactions. • It reinforces Respect & Trust with our patients and their families and visitors. • ALWAYS use AIDET to best communicate your interaction or purpose at each patient/family/visitor encounter

  4. Relationship Based Care is the nursing delivery model of care at MGMC. Relationship based care is a nursing care delivery system that gives us a structure for organizing and delivering care with Registered Nurse responsibility, authority and accountability for outcome as well as emphasis on intentional partnerships with patients and families. The Patient is at the center of our care. The Health Care team is responsible for knowing the patient’s history or patient’s story. The Patient is involved in goal making and their individual plan of care. Use the White board to communicate the plan of care with our patients. Our computerized medical record highlights our patient's preferences and individualization needed to give excellent care.

  8. What is located on the Second Floor? 2 west Maternal Child Health Unit Medical Office Buildings - OB/GYN and Surgical OR and Surgical services Cardiac Cath Lab Endoscopy Classrooms 1-3 Library

  9. What located on the 3rd Floor? • 3 West • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit • PT/OT Inpatient Gym • Administration Offices • Meeting Rooms 1-4 What is on the Third Floor?

Come prepared to seek learning experiences and actively engage in the experience offered. • Be motivated, enthusiastic, willing to learn and be an active part of the healthcare team • Maintain Confidentiality at all times • Assist the unit team if available • Be appropriately prepared for my clinical experience • Follow the dress code • Adhere to the student code of conduct • Be Punctual • Be Knowledgeable in relevant anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and clinical practice guidelines for your clinical area • Bring required equipment Open the doors to learning As A Student Nurse I Will . . .

  12. Observational Experiences As a Student you may have the opportunity to observe a nursing specialty. These opportunities are for observing only, no hands on. You will not be preforming any tasks. It is an chance to learn about the different roles of the registered nurse. Areas for observational experiences • The Operating Room • Endoscopy Unit • Cardiac Catheterization Lab

  14. WASH your HANDS! • 5 Moments for preforming hand hygiene • Effective Hand Hygiene utilizing soap and water or alcohol rub requires a 15 second minimum scrub per CDC guidelines.

  15. PainAssessment & Follow Up • Assess Pain every hour • Follow up pain medications within 30-60 minutes of administering pain medication

  16. Smart Pumps • Use the Smart Pump Drug Library and Clinical Care Area 100% of the time

  17. Communication • Communicate frequently with your nurse. • Use the ISBAR format when giving report.

  18. Communication • Answer call lights  • Cancel the call by pushing the green button on the duty station in the patient room • Update the white boards

  19. Rapid Response • A Rapid Response is call for a rapid assessment of an inpatient with acute status changes. • Dial 1-6444 from a landline phone to call a rapid response

  20. Rapid Response GuidelinesStudent nurses are encouraged to call if: Patient experiences Acute Changes: • <40 or >130 beats per minute • Systolic Blood Pressure <90 mmHg • Respiratory Rate <8 or >28 breaths per minute • Level of Consciousness Patient experiencing Acute & Persistent changes: • Saturation< 90% with Oxygen Need for additional clinical opinion: • Concerned, Unsure, Scared, Safety Concerns

Student Nurse Documentation Utilize the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Evidence Based Practice Clinical Practice Guidelines help to guide your nursing practice by answering these questions: • What are the potential complications related to this diagnosis? • What should I be aware of or how do I identify these complications? • What does the most current evidence say about this disease/disorder? • What do I need to educate my patient about this disease/disorder?

  22. Document in Real Time • Use the computer in the patient’s room

  23. Use Bar Code Scanners for Medication Administration • Bar Code Scanners are located in every patient room. • Use the Bar Code Scanners for every medication given STOP and SCAN
