  1. Working the Chains • Pre-Game Duties • Ensure equipment is on the visitors sideline • Roll out the chains/equipment and ensure it measures ten yards and is properly protected • Introduce yourself to the chain crew • If not available or missing persons find home field coach and make him aware that you need a full chain crew before the game can start (preferably adults)

  2. Working the Chains • Go over duties of Chain Crew • Chains and Down Indicator do not move until you tell them to (emphasize punt plays) • First downs will be marked with foot furthest down field • Yard marker clip will be placed on the back of the second line after every first down • Plays close to the sideline or out of bounds will allow the Chain Crew to drop the “sticks” and get out of the way • Crew should not verbally or otherwise root for a specific team • On field measurements • Marking five yards with tape on the chains (optional) • Placement of the chains on the sidelines • Moving the chains on the sidelines

  3. Working the Chains • Game Responsibilities • Mark every first down with appropriate foot downfield (should be done within 5 yards of sideline) • After each play ensure appropriate down is indicated on down indicator box and the box has been placed on the appropriate spot • Person running the down indictor box should not move until you move him after each play concludes • When moving to the sideline NEVER turn your back to the field • Ensure Crew is not being impeded from moving the chains through the coaches/players area • Ensure crew is moving fast enough to keep game going • Re-instruct the Crew prior to scrimmage kicks not to move until you have instructed them to move • Respond to the Crews concerns when applicable
