  1. IG: enabler or barrier Tony Cobain, Head of IM&T Assurance, MIAA 2nd May 2012

  2. A word from the wise….. “You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t” Bart Simpson Renowned Philosopher

  3. Silos are for grain not people • We don’t live our lives in silos and don’t expect our care providers to work in them • Care pathways extend beyond organisational boundaries • How can provide the most effective care and the best experience if we don’t talk to each other

  4. Lessons from integrated care pilots • Systems aren’t interoperable • Orgs won’t share over confidentiality concerns • Creating ISPs is cumbersome and bureaucratic • Patients seem little benefit as its process driven rather than patient centric

  5. Another word from the wise….. “No healthcare provider is an island” Bill Gates from “The Digital Nervous System”

  6. Who are we protecting? • IG is not a barrier – but it can be, and often is, used as one • People DO hide behind IG and the DPA • Since when was the Trust, Social Services or any other care partner the most important “person” in the care “contract”

  7. What about me, its my care • YES, confidentiality is important • But so is “the right place, the right time and the right people” • What if it was you or yours

  8. Getting the balance right

  9. When it goes wrong • Soham murders • Victoria Climbie • Baby P • In each case the APPROPRIATE sharing of information may have prevented a death

  10. IG as an enabler • Common standards and understanding • Clarity over what can be shared and when • Clarity over the security arrangements that must be in place • Clarity over how the information must be maintained and used

  11. IG as an enabler • It promotes trust • It demonstrates our standards and competence to partners, patients and other stakeholders • It demonstrates that we are doing our “reasonable best” at all times

  12. Running scared • What are we scared of? • The ICO vs your conscience • I know who I’d rather face!!!

  13. A final word from the wise….. “People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people - and that social norm is just something that has evolved over time.” Mark Zuckerberg Founder and CEO of Facebook
