  2. TIP #1 • Eliminate information that is not critical to the main idea of the sentence. I really think that we should pay more attention to what Mrs. Van Orden is saying so that we can be more successful in her class. • If you pay attention in Mrs. Van Orden class you will be successful and get an “A”

TIP # 2 • Use a dictionary to help you understand the meaning of unknown words. • Martin Luther King was very eloquent when he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. • Eloquent= having the power of moving people with his words. • Martin Luther King moved people with his words when he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.

  4. TIP # 3 • Use a Thesaurus to help you rephrase a word/detail using synonyms. Dr. King never degraded any person, he believed all people should be treated with respect. • Degrade- devalued • Believed- thought • treated with respect- treated with regard Dr. King never devalued any person, he thought all people should be treated with regard.

  5. TIP # 4 • Rephrase words/phrases to express the author’s central idea in a different way. Change the order in a sentence to express the author’s central idea.

  6. TIP # 5 • Use pronouns for names or names for pronouns to express the central idea clearly. • Dr. King never degraded any person, Dr. King believed all people should be treated with respect. • Dr. King never degraded any person, he believed all people should be treated with respect.

  7. TIP # 6 • Include signal words/phrases t link key detail/ideas together. • Signal words are transition words that will help the flow of your sentence.

Paraphrase Sample 1Original Sentence: Health Experts say that overeating and a lack of exercise have caused Americans to gain too much weight. • Health professionals say that if you eat too much and do not exercise very much, then you will increase your weight • Use synonyms : Experts = professionals; gain=increase • Rephrase word/phrases: gain too much weight= overweight; lack of exercise = do not exercise enough • Included signal words/phrases: used an “if … then” statement instead of “caused”

Paraphrase Sample 2Original Sentence: Health Experts say that overeating and a lack of exercise have caused Americans to gain too much weight • Health experts believe that some Americans are overweight because they eat too much unhealthy food and do not exercise enough. • Change the order: started the sentence with the “effect” instead of with the “cause.” • Rephrase words/phrases: gained too much weight = overweight; lack of exercise = do not exercise enough; living a sedentary life. • Include signal words and phrases: use “because” instead of “caused”
