  2. Born: October 25, 1811 near Paris • Died: May 31, 1832 in Paris • Galois was born in the village of Bourg-la-Reine where his father was mayor • He made the Galois theory at the age of 16 • His mother was an educated woman and taught Galois at home until he entered school at the age of 12

  3. He was 21 when he died • Mathematics became his passion • He neglected the rest of his studies to devote his time to his passion, mathematics. • Galois wanted to enter the EcolePolytechnique, which was a very prestigious school in France

  4. He tried to gain acceptance and entrance to the school on two occasions and on both was rejected. • Galois entered what was considered a much inferior school. • He had been studying carefully the works of Lagrange, Gauss, Cauchy, and Abel and worked endlessly on the task of determining which equations are solvable by radicals.

  5. Galois was expelled from school for publicly criticizing the director of his school for failing to support the Revolution • Galois was arrested for political offenses and spent most of the last year and a half of his life in prison. • His only other paper was hastily written the night before he was killed
