What is World Day Against Child Labour? • The day, which is observed on June 12th, is intended to serve as a catalyst for the growing worldwide movement against child labour, including campaigning to world governments and creating education in schools. The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the first World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 as a way to highlight the plight of children who are forced or have to work, often in appalling conditions.   4. How widespread an issue is child labour? The ILO states that 215 million girls and boys throughout the world are engaged in work that deprives them of adequate education, health, leisure and basic freedoms, violating their rights. Of these children, more than half work in hazardous environments, slavery, or other forms of forced labour, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution, as well as involvement in armed conflict. What is the campaign this year? • The ILO has established a number of conventions which it wants all countries to adopt to eradicate child labour. • On this World Day the ILO is calling for: • Universal ratification of the ILO’s Conventions on child labour (and of all ILO core Conventions). • National policies and programmes to ensure effective progress in the elimination of child labour. • Action to build the worldwide movement against child labour. The Olympic Games • Connected to World Day Against Child Labour is the Playfair campaign focused on the Olympic Games. • This is a campaign for the end to sweat shop practices, including the employment of children, associated with companies advertising in the Olympics, including many brand names you may be familiar with. • Look at the website to see more about the campaign: www.playfair2012.org.uk.

Activities • You could use the information and photos in the presentation to produce a fact file about World Day Against Child Labour. • Use the information and photos you have researched to write a letter to your MP about the main issues. • You could use the information and photos within the presentation and on the linked websites to produce a campaigning leaflet or poster identifying why people should support a campaign against child labour.
