The role of Danish Consumer Council Host for the international delegation Accreditation issues Contact to DK officials – press briefings Provided private accomodation for delegation members (appx 8-15) Other logistics, cellphones, work places Social events Rasmus Kjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  3. CI objectives for being at COP15 To establish the consumer movement as an actor in the climate debate To ‘test’ our positions To network – meet potential allies of the consumers view To learn the ‘game’ of COPs –important actors BUT (to be realistic…) NOT To influence the result of the COP Rasmus Kjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  4. Benefits from participating at the COP15 • Networking with relevant actors • Experience in hosting a big event in corporation with CI • Experience in working with international press • Preparation and resources are key issues for success RasmusKjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  5. My experience as head of the CI delegation • Many CI delegates were uncertain of what to do during the summit. My job was give them • A social frame • A purpose for the days eg. assign meetings • I chaired daily meetings for all consumer participants, morning and late afternoon during the whole COP – to plan, share experiences and evaluate • Daily blogs for benefit of CI members was a success • Close cooperation between my own organization and the CI secretariat was crucial - before, during and after the summit RasmusKjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  6. What did we learn about engagement with industry and stakeholders during the COP ? • Dialogue should be established in due time before the event • Our positions should be ultra clear. • Focus also on authorities/governments – Consumers members on national delegations is important • Common goals and strategies must be developed with other organisations – do not stand alone • Follow-up after the event is necessary RasmusKjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  7. Recommendations to the consumer movement for Rio+20 • CI to agree on clear objectives for Rio+ 20 very soon • Have the internal structure and position papers in place well in advance • Set up goals that are realistic - match the resources available • Get a side event + include food and drinks ! • Do not forget to be fun and spectacular - events, happenings and parties RasmusKjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  8. More of this….. Rasmus Kjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  9. (Recommendations…) • Network and make alliances before Rio+20 with other stakeholders to make stronger impact • Evaluate daily during Rio+20 – set up the objectives and goals for the next day • Evaluate after Rio+20 – what goals were reached, which were not – the road ahead • Clear roles to all in CI delegation beforehand – we should be a team where everyone to have a mission – not tourists!!! Rasmus Kjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience

  10. Conclusions We learned a lot in Copenhagen Lets use it to make an impact in Rio + 20 ! Rasmus Kjeldahl - The Danish COP15 experience
