The University of Kentucky Writing Program believes in the power of student voices. We recognize that students come with unique stories and experiences, and we honor their diverse communities. We don't force topics; instead, we encourage the exploration of engaging subjects that matter to students. Our aim is to instill confidence in every writer, dispelling the myth that some simply aren't "good at writing." By emphasizing rhetorical intent, we prepare students to write for various audiences and to contribute meaningfully to their communities, making things happen through their words.

Students are already writers What We Believe
Students come to the university with rich stories to tell What We Believe
In order to connect students to the larger community, we must first honor the communities they come from What WE Believe
When students believe their writing makes a difference, things happen—for them, and for the community What We Believe
What We Do and Don’t DO • WE DON’T force students to write about issues that don’t interest them • WE DO encourage students to invent topics and pathways into assignments that will engage them
What We DO and Don’t DO • WE DON’T teach writing solely for students to succeed in school • WE DO instruct students to write with rhetorical intent, so they learn how to write for many audiences and situations
WHAT WE DO and don’t do • WE DON’T accept the view that some students are “just not good at writing” • WE DO expect all students to succeed in writing significant essays about the community
The University of Kentucky Writing Program invites students to engage the world around them critically and creatively, and to discover that through writing, they can make things happen. We believe that writers excel when their projects connect them to a larger community and an authentic audience. Our Program mission
