The most common type of cancer smokers get is lung cancer. If no one smoked, lung cancer would be a very rare disease because most of the people who have lung cancer smoke or smoked. The more cigarettes you smoke the higher risk you have of getting lung cancer and other cancers. Lung cancer and other cancers can develop when you smoke, so why would you smoke?   3. What's In A Cigarette? Cancer What's In A Cigarette? There are so many hurtful chemicals and ingredients in a cigarette. One bad ingredient in a cigarette is tobacco. Tobacco is a green leafy plant. There are over 4,000 chemicals in a cigarette. Fifty one of them are carcinogenic. Carcinogenic means something that causes cancer. Chemicals in a cigarette don’t only cause cancer, they cause other diseases as well. Chemicals in a cigarette are so bad that if a person ate a pack of cigarettes they would die. One chemical in a cigarette is nicotine. Nicotine causes the addiction to cigarettes. Most times, once someone starts smoking cigarettes it can be hard to stop smoking them because of the nicotine. Another bad chemical is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a tasteless and odorless poisonous gas. This is the same gas that comes out of car exhausts.   4. Secondhand Smoke Cancer Another name for secondhand smoke is environmental tobacco smoke[ETS]. Secondhand smoke is a mixture of two forms that come from a burning cigarette. Side stream smoke is one type and it comes from the end of a burning cigarette. Mainstream smoke is the smoke that is exhaled from a smoker. Side stream smoke is more likely to give you cancer than mainstream smoke. When non-smokers breathe in a smoker’s smoke they are breathing in nicotine and other toxic chemicals. The more smoke from cigarettes you are exposed to, the higher risk there is of getting these chemicals in your body. If you are a non-smoker and you live with a smoker you have a 25% increase of having a heart attack or a stroke. Secondhand smoke is such a terrible thing.
