* Mumina* - HerStruggles with English Proficiency • Lived in a refugee camp in Kenya • Has now lived in the US for 8 years • Needs constant mentoring • When others read materials aloud, Mumina can select correct answer & explain concepts * We need to provide the same opportunitiesfor success in schools for all students because they cannot be expected to perform at the same level.
“PRE-Activities” • VOCABULARY CARDS: Have students select all words they do not understand and combine all word into vocabulary list. (Have cards ready for next class) - Use this technique in every reading exercise. • THINK ALOUDS- great brainstorming techniques… • INTEREST SURVEYS- keep students involved…
“DURING-Activities” • DIRECTED NOTE-TAKING: Have students circle all words they don’t comprehend, underline key-phrases of the reading, etc.. (Mark it up) “ex. MJ article” • CHORAL READINGS- Only use when appropriate • FISHBOWL DISCUSSIONS– In physical education we can do this on the ground to start or end class when necessary.
“POST-Activities” • RESPONSE/JOURNAL WRITING: This is very effective for students; keeping a journal to be collected on a weekly basis keeps students connected with their mind, body, and soul in Physical education. (Parents will sign) • Opinionaires - Students respond to what they liked or didn’t like/good teacher reflection. • Overall Review – Generalize what the main ideas were from class that day leading into the next day.
