  2. FOOTHILL HIGH SCHOOLCLASS OF:201420152016 • Timeline • September: • Organize Your Applications • Narrow your list of colleges to between five and ten. • Create an online application for each college system. (UC, CSU)

Naviancewww.tustin.k12.ca.us/foothillhs Under quick links you will see Naviance. • Sign on to your Naviance account. • Search for scholarships, colleges, careersand Brag Sheets ( After completion, copy & paste into a word document to increase the font size! • College application due dates. • Scatter grams (graphs of previous student outcomes with GPA, SAT scores, number of students accepted, rejected, waitlisted, etc.

  4. October: • Filing period for Cal State October 1 to November 30 • State System and UC System applications are available on-line. • For assistance with applications and other pertinent college information visit the CCC. November: • Filing period for UC’s November 1 to November 30. • Check individual colleges for housing packages. • Attend TUSD College Night with parents November 4, 2013. • Check your e-mail for updated college information. • Subject tests (if required).

  5. December: • Absolutelythe last time to take Sat Reasoning and SAT Subject Tests (if required). • Absolutelythe last time to take ACT (writing for UC’s). • Continue to check your e-mail for updated college information.

  6. January: • Fill out FAFSA for Financial Aid. • Ok to estimate parent’s income; can go back & change. (IRSRetrieval Tool) • Check individual colleges for Financial Aid deadline. February: • Notify your Counselor to send Mid-year report for private schools, if requested. • Some UC or State campuses may request a 7th semester transcript. • Check your e-mail and college web portals. March: • UC Campuses will begin notifying applicants by e-mail.

  7. April: • Most colleges will e-mail decision letters. • Make final visits to colleges to which you have been accepted. • Make your final decision! Notify colleges of your intent to register, or not to register. Most colleges require a commitment by May 1st. May/June: • Order final transcripts through Parchment (FHS Website) Deadline 7/01

The California Community Colleges • www.ccco.edu • Applications available late spring. • English and Math placement tests are usually required. • English and Math EAP scores in the 11th grade may exemptplacement testing. • See College website for exemption regarding CST scores. • High School GPA, SAT and ACT scores are not considered when transferring from a community college.

  10. The California State University Admissions • All academic information is self-reported. • Official transcripts are not required with initial application. • LOR and personal statements are not accepted. • Application filing period is October 1-November 30. • SAT Reasoning test or ACT required. • Have a qualified eligibility index (combination of your GPA and your test score on either the ACT or the SAT). • All classes must be passed with a grade of ‘C’ or better.

CSU Admissions • Apply online at the CSU Mentor website: www.csumentor.edu • Apply to several CSU campuses with just one application. • Non-refundable application fee of $55.00 for each campus selected. • Apply for financial aid, if needed. (After January 1) • Take the English Placement Test and/or Entry Level Math Test, unless exempt. • E-mail is the primary means of communication with applications. Check your e-mail frequently and read your messages from the CSU. • May require first semester senior grades (7TH semester transcript)

The University of CaliforniaAdmissions • All academic information is self-reported. • Official transcripts are notrequired with initial application. • LOR are not accepted. • Application filing period is November 1-November 30. • SAT Reasoning Test or ACT, with writing, required. • Personal statements are required. • All classes must be passed with a grade of ‘C’ or better. ELC (Eligibility in the Local Context): If you rank in the top 9% of students in your senior class you may be eligible for ELC designation. After submitting a UC application you can return to the My UC application page to see whether you have been designated as being in the top 9% of your class.

UC Admissions Apply online at: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply • You may apply to as many UC Undergraduate campuses as you like with just one application. • Each of your chosen campuses will receive your application and official ACT/ACT test scores. • Non-refundable application fee of $70.00 for each campus selected. • If you add or drop a course, or fail to earn a ‘C’ or better in a course after you submit your application, you must notify-by mail-the UC Application Center. • If you are admitted you must have your final transcripts sent to your campus admissions office by July 1.

  14. Private Universities • Most applications are available online by September. • Applications contain multiple forms and require official transcripts, letters of recommendation and/or school report. • Many require Midyear Reports (first semester grades for Senior Year, aka: 7th semester grades. • Many require personal statements and/or essays. • Application dates vary. • SAT Reasoning, SAT Subject Tests exams, and ACT policy varies. Check with each University. • Many accept The Common Application. • www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Members.aspx

Letters of RecommendationBrag Sheets & Transcripts All Private and some Out of State Universities require recommendation letters. • NOW is the time to request your letters of recommendation. • Brag Sheets are available on Naviance. www.tustin.k12.ca.us/foothillhs • Important: After completion, copy and paste the Brag Sheet from Naviance onto a Word Doc to increase the font size. • The Common Application is used by most Private Colleges. • The Common Application is one application that is sent to all schools who participate. • Create an online account with The Common Application. https://www.commonapp.org

  16. Access a 'School Forms' section of the Common App where teachers and counselors can be identified. When you add the school official, an email is triggered to the teacher and/or the counselor requesting your information. You are then able to track the progress within the Common App. https://www.commonapp.org • Transcripts are sent automatically with the Common Application. • Additional transcripts may be ordered online.www.tustin.k12.ca.us/foothillhs • Deadline for Brag Sheets and requests for Letters of Recommendation is: • October 10, 2013 for Early Decision • November 15, 2013 for all others. NO EXCEPTIONS!

  18. College Admissions Glossary • Early Action: This program has earlier deadlines and earlier notification dates than the regular admissions process. Does notrequire a commitment to one school. • Early Decision: The decision regarding admission is made by mid-December of senior year. A student can apply for early decision to only one school. Requires commitment at the time of acceptance. • Rolling Admissions: There is either no deadline or a very late deadline; qualified students are accepted until classes are filled.

  19. Kinds of Financial Aid • Grants: Gifts that do not have to be repaid. Awarded according to financial need. • Scholarships: Often awarded to students with high grades & test scores. • Loans: Form of “self-help”aid. Entails serious long-term financial obligations of repayment after one has graduated. • Work/Study: Financial Aid through student employment usually in jobs held open for students on or off campus. • Fee Waivers are built into the CSU/UC Application as well as the Common Application.

  20. Grade Reports • Progress Reports: 5 weeks • Quarter Report: 10 weeks • Aeries Parent Portal and HAIKU: Current report of grades and assignments • Weekly progress reports: Available every Friday in the Counseling Office

  21. Account Information • Check your grades and attendance, email teachers and more with AERIES Parent Portal! • Visit TUSD website at www.tustin.k12.ca.us • Under “Quick Links” on the left-hand side, click on “Aeries Parent Portal”. • If you have problems creating your AERIES Portal account, please e-mail portalhelp@tustin.k12.ca.us for assistance. • Progress Reports: 5 weeks • Quarter Report: 10 weeks • Edline: A constant reporting of grades • Weekly progress reports: Available every Friday in the Counseling Office

  22. HAIKU • Haiku is an online management tool for teachers and students. • Teachers can create web pages custom designed to meet the needs of each class they teach. • Teachers can post assignments, power points and videos of their own or embedded videos from YouTube, Academy or other video sites. • Teachers can grade some assignments online, host blogs, respond to questions in real time and many other features.

  23. Service Academies (Admission by nomination only) Air Force Academy: Colorado Springs, Colorado Coast Guard Academy: New London, Connecticut Merchant Marine Academy: Kings Point, NY Military Academy (Army): West Point, NY Naval Academy: Annapolis, Maryland Course Requirements: Strong college prep academic program with emphasis on math and lab sciences. Grade Point Average: Minimum B average.

  25. Need to Make-up Credits? Check your transcript thoroughly. The completed number of credits on your transcript should total 180 credits. If you need to make up credits see your counselor immediately to discuss: • Adding a class to your current schedule. • A ROP class • Adult Ed (Night School class). • PLATO class.
