Mastering One-Step Equations: Addition & Subtraction Techniques

DESCRIPTION

This lesson focuses on solving one-step equations involving addition and subtraction. Students will learn to isolate the variable using both algebra tiles and the traditional paper-and-pencil method. Key rules, including the Golden Rule of Algebra, guide students through the process. Practice examples such as x + 8 = 2 and x - 4 = 7 will reinforce understanding. The lesson concludes with practice assignments to enhance skills. Ideal for 7th-grade math students seeking to strengthen their equation-solving abilities.

  1. Today’s Lesson: What: One-step equations (Addition & Subtraction) Why: To solve addition and subtraction one-step equations using both algebra tiles and the traditional paper/ pencil method.

  2. Solving Equations: GOAL: To get the variable by __________________ (“isolating” the variable)!! RULE: What you do to one side of the equals (=) sign, you MUST do to______________________________ (“Golden Rule of Algebra”)! itself the other side.

  3. Addition Equations: • x + 8 = 2 What number is with “x”? We have to get “x” by itself! Paper/Pencil Method: Paper/Pencil Method: • 2) • x + (-3) = 7

  4. x = -51 x = 25 x = 50

  5. Subtraction Equations: • x -4 = 7 Paper/Pencil Method: Paper/Pencil Method: • 2) • x - 3 = -2

  6. x = 20 x = 94 x = 31

  7. What about the “double negative” equations? x = 3 x = -20 x = 10

  8. END OF LESSON The next slides are student copies of the notes for this lesson. These notes were handed out in class and filled-in as the lesson progressed. NOTE: The last slide(s) in any lesson slideshow (entitled “Practice Work”) represent the homework assigned for that day.
