The Trait Theory of Leadership It was assumed that by identifying the characteristics of great leaders, we could better understand the type of person who could become a leader, and could potentially identify future leaders early in life. There are three traits ranked consistently high on most lists that one can measure: intelligence, initiative, and responsibility.
