A GROWING PROBLEM

An estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur annually in the USA, according to the CDC. They describe this issue as reaching "epidemic levels." Alarmingly, more than 40% of high school athletes risk returning to sports before fully recovering from concussions, increasing their chances of severe injury or death. Between 2001-2009, visits to the ER for sports-related injuries among youths aged 5 to 18 surged by 62%, with traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, affecting 173,285. The Protecting Student Athletes From Concussion Act of 2011 aims to establish minimum state guidelines for concussion management in school sports.
