3. Settlement at Roanoke • Sir Walter Raleigh persuades Queen Elizabeth to set up colonies in North America. Why did I think a settlement in North America would be good for England?

4. Answer: Raleigh thought that the Queen would be interested in North America’s resources, especially its timber supply. North America had: * Good harbors * Plenty of timber to make ships * Plenty of trees to make masts * It was all FREE!

5. Roanoke : “The LOST Colony” • 1585—first settlers arrived at Roanoke (off the coast of North Carolina), but return to England. • Experienced rough winter. • 1587—John White (leader of colony) and a second group of settlers established the colony again. • John White was sent back to England for supplies. • 1590 – White returns from England, but all of Roanoke’s settlers are gone. • Their disappearance is still a mystery.

8. Jamestown Colony (Virginia) • Years later, Englishmen asked King James for a charter—a document which allows people to form a colony.

9. The Virginia Company • James I gives the Virginia Company a charter. • Virginia company was a joint-stock company, in which investors bought shares (part ownership). - Investors did that in hopes that the company will make money and that they would share the profits.

10. This charter allows them to settle north of Roanoke between North Carolina and the Potomac River.

11. Starvation & Recovery • The first years of settlement was difficult because colonists argued all the time • Captain John Smith takes over. • He feels that the settlers are too interested in gold. • He sets up strict rules, including a new work-to-eat policy. • He visits nearby Indian tribes to trade for food.

12. The “Starving Times” • Smith leaves the Jamestown colony and it begins to lose strength again. • In 1612, the settlers of Jamestown begin to grow tobacco and it becomes a huge economic success. • Tobacco becomes very popular in England. • It becomes Jamestown’s CASH CROP, making the settlement lots of money.

13. More Settlers Come to Jamestown • The Virginia Company gives a headright, or land grant—gives 50 acres of land to settlers who paid their own way to the colony. • Women • Women helped to make the colony more settled. • They could not vote. • They made everything from scratch. • Africans • First Africans arrive in Virginia in 1619. • Colonists valued them for their agricultural skills.

14. Jamestown Becomes a “Royal Colony” • The Virginia Company allows colonists to take part of government. • Colonists choose burgesses (representatives) to make rules for the colonists. • The House of Burgesses becomes the first congress in North America elected by people • The Virginia Company could not make any profit, so King James takes over the colony and makes it a royal colony.

Activity: Advertisement Draft • Write an Advertisement for a Newspaper in England that encourages people to come to America in the 1600s. • You must: • Come up with a “catchy” phrase! • Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph in which you explain why people should come to North America. • Use an image to encourage people to emigrate.
