  2. What is Advertising? • A form of communication. • Help sell products or services. • Usually communicates a message that includes the name of the product or service and how it will benefit the consumer.

  4. What is being advertised here? • Where do you think this photo was taken at? • Why do you think these ads were placed here?

  5. Some history on advertising • Egyptians , Pompeii, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome have all used some means of advertisements. • In England in the 17th century advertisements were found in weekly newspapers. • In 1836 a French newspaper included the first paid advertisement. • 1840 advertising agency's were founded in Boston.

  6. History Continued: • By 1920’s the first radio stations were appearing. • Radio stationed soon learned that they could make money by selling sponsorship spots to businesses. • This same practice was carried over to Television in the 1940’s and early 1950’s.

  7. History Continued: • In the 1960’s creativity was allowed in advertisements- producing advertisements with unexpected messages. • 1980-1990’s cable television was introduced. This brought on channels directly meant for advertising (QVC, Home Shopping Network). • Also, in the 1990’s the internet became a new means of advertising.

  8. Different ways to Advertise today: • Television • Radio • Cinema • Magazines • Newspapers • Video Games • Billboards • Direct Mail • Internet • Telephone

  9. What do you think? • How many times a day do you think you see advertisements? • What is your favorite commercial and why? • Are there any other forms of advertising that might not have been mentioned?

  10. What makes a good advertisement? • Wording- What you say and how you say it. • Placement- In the appropriate publication. • Make it “self-interesting” • Spark curiosity. • Inspire people. • Creating a response.

  11. What can you tell me about these two add? Which ad is from 1904 and which one is from 1986? How can you tell?

Why has coca cola been successful in their advertising? • They produced a trademark- Coke. • Coca cola continually developed different ads for different times. • 1971 Coca Cola had a commercial that soon became a hit signal. • Elaborate holiday ads. • Coca Cola was the first sponsor of the Olympic games in 1928. • In 2001 Coca Cola restructured their ads to so that they were produced locally around the world, and not all from the same advertising company.

  13. Coca Cola: • What do you already know about Coca Cola advertisements? • What did you learn about Coca Cola today? • Are there any other companies that you know of that have great advertisements?

  14. Homework: • Bring in an ad or a video of one of your favorite ads. • Be prepared to discuss why it is one of your favorites and why it is appealing to its consumers. • Be prepared to discuses the similarities and differences between ads that are brought into class.
