  7. Wangari Muta Maathai She was born on born April 1, 1940 in the Ihithe Village of Kenya. There was no school in the village so Wangari helped take care of the other children while her mother worked in the fields and her father worked as a mechanic and driver.

  8. Major Life Events • Maathai was able to pursue higher education, a rarity for girls in rural areas of Kenya. • She earned her biology degree from Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas and a master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh.

  9. Major Life Events Continued • When she returned to Kenya, Wangari Maathai worked in veterinary medicine research at the University of Nairobi. • Later Wangari Maathai became involved in organizing work for poor people and working against Kenya's deforestation.

  10. Hardships/Struggles • In 1998, Wangari Maathai gained worldwide attention when the Kenyan President backed development of a luxury housing project and building began by clearing hundreds of acres of Kenya forest and she organized protests against the project. Wangari Maathai was arrested and imprisoned; an Amnesty International letter-writing campaign helped free her.

  11. Hardships/Struggles Continued • In 1999 she suffered head injuries when attacked while planting trees in the Karura Public Forest in Nairobi, part of a protest against continuing deforestation. She was arrested numerous times by the government of Kenya’s President Daniel Moil.

  12. Major Accomplishments • She has planted more than 10 million trees to prevent soil erosion and provide firewood for cooking fires • In December, 2002, Wangari Maathai was elected to the Kenyan Parliament • Authored: The Green Belt Movement: Sharing the Approach and the Experience

Wangari Maathai is a HERO because She said and believes: “Women are responsible for their children, they cannot sit back, waste time and see them starve.” (Wangari) African women, through the paid employment for planting the trees, are now able to better care for their children and their children's future.

Wangari Maathai is a HERO because “The privilege of a higher education, especially outside Africa, broadened my original horizon and encouraged me to focus on the environment, women and development in order to improve the quality of life of people in my country in particular and in the African region in general.” (Wangari, 1) She has inspired African women to continue their education.

  15. Wangari Maathai is a HERO because "Maathai stood up courageously against the former oppressive regime in Kenya" the Norwegian Nobel Committee said. (Wangari, 1) Maathai was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize for Peace, the first black African woman and the first environmentalist to win a Nobel Prize.

  16. Current Status • In 2010, she co-hosted the Global Greens Nairobi conference, which drew over 1,000 Greens from dozens of Green Parties around the planet. • Her autobiography, Unbowed: One Woman’s Story, was released in September 30, 2011.
