Our Goals are… • To explain the advantages of the AVID elective • To show the benefits of AVID. 3. To explain the expectations of AVID. 4. To provide you with information about applying for Mather’s AVID Program.
What is AVID? • Advancement Via Individual Determination ("AVID") is a national program • used in nearly 4,500 schools nationwide • 16 countries and territories. • It is designed to support students in challenging courses to prepare them for college and career readiness. ___________________________________________
AVID’s Mission AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Who is in AVID? AVID caters to students who are: • Motivated, college-minded • First-generation college attendees • Living in underserved communities • Middle academic performers • Any student who could benefit by receiving extra resources and support
Benefits: AVID at Mather • A caring, supportive teacher who will teach, mentor and advocate for a student for all four years. • Rigorous curriculum, including Honors/AP classes • College visits (2 to 4 per year) • Guest speakers from a variety of careers and colleges • Structured, student study groups facilitated by actual college students (2 days per week) • Grade monitoring and tutoring requirements • One-on-one support with college research, application, scholarships, and FAFSA
Benefits: The AVID Class Helps Students Be More… • Responsible and Organized • Agendas, binders, grade monitoring, and tutoring requirement • Self-advocacy • Engaged with Their Learning • Higher level thinking activities • Collaborative work effort • Focused on Their Overall Academic Success • Skills taught in other classrooms
We Expect Students to… • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher. • Maintain attendance of 90% in all classes. • Set aside enough time to complete schoolwork each night. • Enroll in AVID for four years. • Maintain an AVID binder and Focused Notes for all classes. • Take notes and study them every week.
And We Expect Students to… • Complete all class and homework assignments on time. • Be enrolled in some college preparatory courses, including Honors and AP. • Agree to attend tutoring sessions if their grade falls below a “C” in any class. • Be active participants in their school or community by being involved in extra-curricular activities.

Who else plays a big rolein “AVID at Mather”? All of Mather! Once a student is identified as AVID, every teacher and staff member in our building helps reinforce the expectations of students in the program and helps monitor performance and behavior.
WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN AVID?
Benefits: The Curriculum- “AVID at Mather” - • WRITING - essays, college research paper, college personal statement • INQUIRY - Socratic seminars, philosophical chairs, Costa’s “House of Words” • COLLABORATION - weekly study groups, team-building activities, large projects • ORGANIZATION - binders, agendas, grade grids and Cornell notes • READING - a variety of college-level strategies

AVID’s Statistics: Mather College Applications • Seniors who apply and get accepted to a four-year college = 100% Enrollment in AP Level Classes • Junior = 53% • Seniors = 75% SAT Scores • Average is 935 • Average increase of +70 points.
How Parents Can Help: • Participate in your student’s education by monitoring schoolwork, attendance, grades, attending teacher or counselor conferences when requested to do so, and attending AVID parent meetings. • Check your student’s agenda once a week to make sure it is being used, and check your student’s binder once a week to make sure it is organized. • Make sure your student is using Focused Notes for all of his or her classes.
How Parents Can Help: • Encourage your student to participate in activities that further prepare him or her for college selection, including college field trips, joining clubs or sports, being active in the community, and taking required standardized tests. • Participate in one school activity each year, including possibly chaperoning an AVID college or service learning field trip.
