  3. More Early History -Founding location: Tun Tavern in Phildelphia, PA -By Robert Mullan and Samuel Nicholas -Nicholas was named the first Commandant of the Continental Marines -1798, following the American Revolution, the U.S. Marines are officially established. MurphyM_powerpoint.doc

  4. During WWII -Consisted approx. of 485,000 troops -6 divisions, 5 air wings, and supporting troops -The war cost the Marine Corps 87,000 dead or wounded casualties Mt. Surabachi, Iwo Jima MurphyM_powerpoint.doc

Today • -Consists of approx. 185,000 troops • -Includes 4 divisions, 4 air wings, and 4 combat service support groups • The Marine Corps is the only U.S. military branch capable of worldwide deployment without congressional approval • The country’s “911 Force”, or “A force in readiness” MurphyM_powerpoint.doc

Expeditionary Forces • Smaller, more mobile groups of Marines are Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU) • These consist of about 2200 Marines, with a ground, air, and combat support element • These MEU’s make it possible for the Marine Corps to rapidly respond to any crisis anywhere in the world • The Marine Corps is also responsible for the defense of all American Embassies in foreign countries MurphyM_powerpoint.doc
