  2. IT’S JUNE 14TH-GRADUATION DAY! CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2011!! YEA!! Applause Applause…

  3. WAIT ONE MINUTE…. • IS YOUR SENIOR READY??? • Our goal tonight is to provide parents with the information necessary for your son or daughter’s on time graduation and a successful life beyond high school!

  4. WHAT DO SENIORS NEED TO DO TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN PARTICIPATE IN GRADUATION?? Graduation Policy: Review the Senior Status Letter that was mailed home for each Senior’s minimum graduation requirements. See the CHS Course Catalog for specific details. All requirements must be met prior to graduation practice in order to “walk”. (i.e. 22 credits, mandatory classes, state testing, and CP/High School & Beyond Plan) The orange Senior Status Letter form needs to be signed and returned to the counseling center as soon as it is received in the mail. Seniors who do not return the orange Senior Status forms will not be given graduation tickets.

  5. ADVISORY, CP, AND HIGH SCHOOL & BEYOND PLAN • 1. Attend each advisory. Follow the directions given by your students’s advisor & keep up with due dates. • 2. Check the CHS Website periodically. The Advisory section has updated information on Culminating Project (CP) deadlines and High School & Beyond Plan (HSBP) directions and materials. • 3. New Market Students will complete their CP and HSBP at New Market. A completed copy of the Agreement Form provided by New Market must be given to Ms. Marple in the CHS Counseling Center. • 4. Running Start Students are responsible to meet with Ms. Marple once a month during zero hour or after school for instructions and to keep up with deadlines. • 5.Remember the CP and HSBP are Mandatory State Graduation Requirements. Seniors will not walk nor receive a diploma until they are completed.

  6. FOUR YEAR COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES • CHS Graduates who want to attend a 4 year college should: • 1.Get familiar with the Career Center and Ms. Boelts to learn about colleges and universities in our own state and about those around the country/world. The career center will also have college admission counselors visit. Sign ups for these visitations are in the career center. Listen for announcements/check the website for who will be visiting! • 2. Scholarship Information is also available in the Career Center. Lists are updated periodically. Also listen for special announcements and check the CHS Website. • 3. Review the “Steps for a Successful College Application Process” document, for information on applying to colleges and how to obtain letters of recommendation, including the Secondary School Report Form.

  8. COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGES Our career center provides information about 2 year Community Colleges and Technical Colleges, including how to apply and what each program offers. Check individual college websites for current information. With tuition rates on the rise, students may want to consider obtaining an AA (two year Associates degree) before transferring to a 4 year college/university.

  9. ACT AND SAT TESTS Students planning on attending a 4 year college next year, should have already signed up for the ACT or SAT Tests. Check online for dates and register online 4.5 weeks prior to the test date, to avoid late fees. ACT Website: www.actstudent.org SAT Website: www.collegeboard.com Check with individual colleges to see which test they prefer!!

  10. MILITARY INFORMATION • The ASVAB test is required if Seniors choose to join the military after graduation. This test can be taken at the various military recruiting offices. Some local high schools also offer this test. Check in the CHS Career Center for dates and locations. • Students who are in interested in the military are encouraged to contact the recruiting offices of multiple branches to discover their “best fit”. • Notify your student’s counselor if a decision is made to join the military. If students are under 18 years of age, parents must provide written consent in order to provide recruiters with school information. • College ROTC programs are another option for students to consider, if they are interested in the military. This will allow students to complete a 4 year degree, often paid for by the military prior to service.

  11. NCAA • Seniors should have registered with the NCAA in their Junior year, if they are planning on playing sports for a college/university after high school graduation. For more information and/or to register go to the NCAA Eligibility Center website at http://eligibilitycenter.org. The cost is $65. Fee waivers are available- see the NCAA website for details. • Make sure that the NCAA directions and rules are strictly followed • such as taking only classes that are NCAA approved, maintaining a • full schedule, and making sure test score requirements and reporting • are met. This is absolutely essential to ensure that graduates can play • at the collegiate level and/or earn scholarship awards.

  12. FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION • Attend Financial Aid Night at Capital High School on November 9th at CHS for detailed information and help with funding college. • Complete a “FAFSA” –Free Application for Federal Student Aid, even if you think you may not qualify. Some colleges and scholarships require you to do so. Go to: www.fafsa.ed.gov for information including pin numbers and due dates. • Check the Scholarship List in the CHS Career Center to obtain • information about scholarships available. Make an appointment with Ms. • Boelts for help. www.washboard.org also provides schol. information. • Complete a CSS/Financial Aid profile if your chosen college requires it. • Go to www.collegeboard.com for more information. • Apply for a WUE-Western Undergraduate Exchange Scholarship. This scholarship allows students in the western region of the U.S. to enroll in many 2-4 year public colleges at a reduced tuition level. Go to www.wiche.edu for more information.

  14. WE WANT ALL SENIORS AT GRADUATION! • Helpful Hints For CHS Parents of Seniors: • 1. Remind students to stay organized and to not wait to the last minute to meet deadlines. • 2. Remind students to check to make sure they are making progress and passing all of their classes. • 3. Meet with your student’s counselor! • 4.Remind students to go to Advisory and keep up on their requirements. • 5. Check to make sure your student has met state testing standards. • 6. Check the CHS Website on a regular basis for • announcements and directions. Remind students to attend all Senior Meetings. • 7. Remind students to adhere to all school rules and state laws, while keeping themselves and others safe. • 8. Enjoy this year! Please ask our staff for help!
