  8. Extensive in-car research of commuting coffee drinkers was analyzed and applied to the development of this new hot cup lid. While re-closable lids are not new to the disposable coffee lid industry, this was the world’s first such lid that provided the user with a one-handed means that could be accomplished confidently without even looking at the lid. This was the defining element that set this lid apart from its competition. As lead designer on the project, my involvement began and the concept stage and was carried through to production. My original concept sketch was the fortunate candidate for the final design. The safety benefit and simplicity of the design was recognized with honors from multiple sources including ID Magazine (2004 Best In Category). It was also featured in a special exhibit at MOMA which also included publishing in a book titled - safe: design takes on risk by Paola Antonelli ISBN: 0-87070-580-6 Open Position Partially Open Closed Position Back to Index

  11. Losing market share rapidly due to a newly redesigned competitive product, and a very outdated product line, Medtronic sought assistance outside their own R&D walls to redesign their microdebrider. A microdebrider is used by ear- nose-and-throat (ENT) surgeons to relieve patients of abnormal growths common in the nasal passages. The aperture at the end of the probe tip features a cutting tool that shears tissue. This tissue is then vacuumed through the hollow channel down the middle of its length. The aperture can be rotated remotely by the control wheel on the main body. Within months of launch, Medtronic had reclaimed it’s marketshare many times over repositioning it again as the market leader. Back to Index

  12. One of the most obvious problems with the original product was the linear means in which the internal components were assembled. This caused the surgeon to arduously support the weight of the cantilevered motor, housing and the strain applied by the power, irrigation, and vacuum lines. The breakthrough in the ideation phase of the project was to flip the position of the motor effectively reducing the overall length of the instrument by 33% (not counting the disposable tip/tools) but didn’t effect the overall height. Original Internals Updated Internals This rapid prototype shows the advantage of repositioning the motor. The weight is no longer compounded by a cantilvered position and is more firmly grounded on the center of the hand. Back to Index

  13. Early foam concept used to explore ergonomics and full assembly envelope. Another view of the final product. This photo shows the optional computerized guidance system allowing the surgeons work in areas inaccessible by video- scope. Back to Index

  16. The goal of this project was to truly find out how end users want to perform certain tasks associated with body maintenance. We also soon found that a wide range of age demographic was in play. This product called the “Flex Buff” was meant to address both end users who no longer possess much of their own flexibility and those who were seeking a more efficient means to perform this task. The end user holds each handle and positions the flexible pumice impregnated strap underneath a foot. By cycling the handles, the strap is drawn over the foot and the pumice can do it’s work. Each side of the strap features a different grain of synthetic pumice. Back to Index

  17. Another goal of the project was to bring a unique face to these products making them stand out from the competition. Most competitive products have reduced their materials and cost to the bare minimum causing the products to lose identity and arguably their usability as well. A design language was developed that would be crafted into the design of each product in the line. A callous shaver is much like a single edged shaving razor. It is meant to larger amounts of thick calloused skin. A stressful task to put it mildly. Most shavers have very limited ergonomics and their performance is suspect. The Revlon product achieves superior performance both from it’s base design which controls blade depth but also through knock-out ergonomics allowing the end user increased control of fine motor movements and decreased dependence on gross motor movements. 18. A lot of foot smoothing occurs in the shower where the warm water aids in the process. This foot smother is essentially a bed of pumice that features a concave region that transitions into a convex region. Its base is overmolded with a tough elastomer that holds firm on the shower floor. The end user merely rubs their foot onto this product using the variable surface topology to their advantage. The truly wonderful aspect for most is that this is all done without having to bend over making it perfect for those with less flexibility or small showers. Back to Index

  19. For those seeking a more traditional, hands on approach to foot smoothing we were still able to apply some great benefits, usability and uniqueness to this product. The “All Around Pumice Stone” was inspired by a French curve template commonly found in art and design studios worldwide. The essence of a French curve is it’s ever changing curvature providing a guide allowing you to sketch just about any shape you could imagine. This product means to address your ever changing curves by providing you with a secure power grip at any angle and by providing you with countless contours to mate up to your body. Back to Index

  20. Additional Scope of Work: LeeRowan, a NewellRubbermaid Division LeeRowan Stingray Drill Positioning System LeeRowan Corporate Design Team Heath Doty - Lead Designer LaserCut and Formed Sheet AL Injection molded components Photoshop, Illustrator, Mechanical- Desktop, Rapid Prototyping 1999 Back to Index

  21. While working for LeeRowan a Division of NewellRubbermaid, I was tasked with the development of a new commercial builder installation template for the installation of our flagship product - ventilated shelving. The standard issue installation template shown here was bulky, heavy difficult to use, unintuitive and as a result, was usually left in the truck. It was discovered by our field reps that many installers were taking matters into their own hands with some creative solutions. Adaptive behavior in humans is a phenomenal area of study. This project sought to study the adaptive means by which these installers overcame the obstacles that faced them. This data was analyzed and applied to a new solution Back to Index

  22. This series of photos from our research shows an installer using the shelf itself (which featured known dimensional geometry) in combination with his level and cordless drill. The installer had even gone as far as to inscribe or mark his level to further aid in accurate drilling of the holes where the shelf mounts would attach to the wall. Across the country we observed tactics such as this. The collective data gathered through observations, interviews, photographs, etc. was compiled into a list of design criteria. The results of which are shown on the next slide. The Stingray DPS (Drill Positioning System) was a huge hit with installers. Back to Index

  23. The Stingray DPS featured a formed aluminum frame supporting bezels for spirit levels, guide arms, and hardened steel drill bushings. The drill bushings had a color coded washer that coordinated their use depending on the task. All surfaces coming in contact with the wall were protected with injection molded components. Other criteria demanded that the Stingray DPS weigh no more than the common cordless drill used by contractors and that it hold 4 guide arms which typically would coordinate with any sized shelving the installer used in that region of the country. All parts were field serviceable with a standard screw driver and additional holes for the drill bushings were provided allowing the installer to customize their template for their specific niche. The template itself was extremely fast. The other main benefit of the system was the reduction of over all installation time. The installer could typically carry their hardware bucket, drill, shelving and the template for one job in one trip from the truck. Back to Index

  25. For the development of the new flagship for Fountain Powerboats, I was tasked as the lead industrial designer. I was responsible for the design of everything above the waterline including the under- cabin and it’s amenities. Working closely with engineering, naval architects, tooling and production we developed Fountain’s 47’ Lightning in one year’s time. Shown above is photo looking forward through the under-cabin. To the left is the galley and the seating area and forward v-berth is beyond that. To the right is a photo looking aft from the v-berth showing the access to the head on the left and the galley region to the right. The photo to the left shows a closer view aft of the galley. Many new methods of manufacture and assembly were employed on this craft allowing it to be manufactured quicker than boats much smaller than it. This resulted in greatly increased profitability for Fountain. Back to Index
