King Lear. Act IV Notes. ACT IV, Scene 1. Heath—Edgar says he is ready to reveal himself BUT he sees his blind father coming. Can’t reveal himself until he knows what’s going on: guilty, fear Gloucester gets rid of Old Man and tells him to bring back clothes for Poor Tom.

  2. ACT IV, Scene 1 • Heath—Edgar says he is ready to reveal himself BUT he sees his blind father coming. Can’t reveal himself until he knows what’s going on: guilty, fear • Gloucester gets rid of Old Man and tells him to bring back clothes for Poor Tom. • Asks Poor Tom/Edgar to lead him to a cliff in Dover—then he will give him money. SUICIDE?!

  3. Act IV, Scene 2 • In front of Albany’s palace. • Goneril kisses Edmund and gives him something special. ?? She doesn’t take Edmund into the house because a servant warns her that Albany is acting strange. Sends him back to Cornwall. • Albany and Goneril argue. Albany blames Goneril for all the bad deeds. • She has “disbranched” herself from her father’s tree.

  4. Act IV, Scene 2 (Cont.) • Albany says he would kill Goneril but she’s a woman. • Goneril calls Albany a sissy and mocks him. • Goneril receives a letter from Regan. Cornwall is dead!! Hmmm. This might be good—more power, or bad—Regan might try to steal Edmund.

  5. Act IV, Scene 3 • Camp near Dover. • Kent and Gentleman talk about the letter that Kent sent to Cordelia. Scene has less emotion so audience can recover. • Cordelia’s reaction: tears, smiles, deals with grief in a balanced way. Does not let her emotions get control. “Heavenly,” “holy,” “diamonds,” “smilets,” all beautiful words to describe Cordelia.

  6. Act IV, Scene 4 • In Cordelia’s camp. • Doctor says only sleep will help Lear. • Cordelia sends people out to find Lear. Lear runs away anytime somebody says that he should see his daughter. Lear is wearing a crown of weeds and running around in the corn. • When Cordelia learns about British coming, she reacts calmly. Says she wants to protect her father—not get revenge.

  7. Act IV, Scene 5 • Oswald and Regan talk. • Regan wants to read the letter that Oswald is carrying to Edmund (from Goneril). Oswald says “no.” • Regan knows that Goneril and Edmund are an item. She says she is better than Goneril. Asks Oswald to send a letter from HER to Edmund. • NOTE: OSWALD IS CARRYING TWO LETTERS TO EDMUND. WHAT IF OSWALD LOSES THE LETTERS? WHO NEEDS TO SEE WHAT IS IN THE LETTERS?
