The proportion of subjects with HI titers ≥40 for H1N1; H3N2 and B viruses were higher in children receiving split virus vaccine. • The proportions of seroconversion for H1N1, H3N2 and B viruses were also higher in subjects receiving the split virus vaccine. • The overall local reactions were similar in both vaccine types. Generations of influenza vaccine Whole-virus vaccine (1945) 1st generation Split vaccine (1964) 2nd generation Subunit vaccine (1976) 3rd generation • Contains intact virus particles • They stimulate the immune response • More reactogenicand cause more adverse reactions, such as pain at the injection site • Contains fragmented virus particles, including internal constituents as well as HA & NA • This vaccine type causes fewer adverse reactions than the whole-virus vaccine • Contains predominantly surface proteins (mainly HA and NA), which reduces the protein load • As effective as whole-virus or split vaccines • With fewer adverse reactions than with whole-virus & Split vaccines
