  3. Causes of the Navajo Long Walk • Treaty after war • Navajo lived in new American land • Were forced to leave • Many died along the way • Travel more than 450 miles

  4. People Involved • Navajos-the native Americans • William T.H. Brooks-new commander of fort defiance • Manuelito- Lead the Navajos leadership • General James H Carleton-New Mexico’s US army commander • Kit Carson-directed the destruction of Navajos property and directed and organized the long walk

  5. Background Information • Also known as the Bosque Redondo • Made to rehabilitate the Navajos • 8,500 Navajos • Walked 500 miles • From Arizona to New Mexico

  6. Background Information Continued • Miserable failure • Sovereignty in the treaty of 1868 • Returned to land hungry • Territory reduced • Few allowed to return to native lands
