  1. Lab 11: Mammalian Organ Systems II – Respiratory and Circulatory Systems

  2. Task A-1: Rat respiratory system Task B-2: Rat circulatory system • Work with same partner as last week • Use the same rat as last week (if you can’t find it, get help from a TA) • If you don’t have a partner, let a TA know • Follow lab manual directions for opening the chest cavity (cut up along sternum towards the head)

  3. Task A-1: Rat respiratory system Task B-2: Rat circulatory system • See exit activity (in your lab manual); quiz each other on structures • Use the figures in your lab manual to help you! • Don’t destroy structures!

  4. Task A-1: Rat respiratory system Task B-2: Rat circulatory system • don’t worry about all of the arteries and veins that are in your manual – just those on the exit activity • the iliac arteries become the femoral arteries – just learn them as a the iliac/femoral arteries • latex colors: • yellow – hepatic portal system • red – arteries to most of body; pulmonary veins • blue – veins from most of body; pulmonary arteries • SOMETIMES these are not done correctly

  5. Task B-1: Bovine (cow) heart • Use tubes to help you get a sense of the flow of blood through the heart • Learn the order of blood flow into, through, and out of the heart – including structure names (blood vessels, heart chambers, and valves)

  6. Task C-1: Blood smear slide • Don’t forget the slide this week! • use Figure 11-8 to help you • be able to identify each of these cell types (this makes an excellent slide question or two for the practical) • “red blood cells” may have the red color faded out; go more by shape than by color

  7. also… • You will likely have some extra time after completing the activities for today’s lab; take advantage of it for review!!! • plenty of review material is available for all labs • all the stuff you need for last week’s lab is out in case you did not finish
