UnstructuredPhDProgrammes UnstructuredPhDprogramme – a doctoratein Europe traditionally involved a one-on-one relationship between the master and the apprentice. „Doktorvater” Majority of supervisors were primarily task-focused coupled with someconcern with the humane aspects of supervision, there was little evidence of innovation and reflection.

MARIE CURIE ACTIONS -adedicated programme for structuring training, mobility andcareer development- Objectives: • Increase humanresources potential in R&D in Europe • Stimulate people to enter into the profession of researcher • Encourage researchers to stay in Europe • Attract researchers from around the world • Employment contracts with full social rights • Adequate working conditions and attractive salaries • Peer-reviewed international evaluation • European (and international) prestige Conditions: • Mobility – tran-snational & inter-sectoral • Excellence

Initial Training Networks Associated Country 2 Multi-partner ITNs (Multi-ITN) • At least 3 participants* (any type) from 3 different MS/ACAbove this minimum, participation of also third countries is possible (“level 1”) • Associated partners from any country / sector / discipline (“level 2”) • Private sector participation: “highest possible level” • ESR: appointment for 3-36 months • ER: appointment for 3-24 months • Secondments encouraged(up to 30% of recruitment period) • Each “level 1” partner must recruit

Initial Training Networks Associated Innovative Doctoral Programmes (IDP) • 1 participant(“level 1”) • Associated partners (“level 2”) from different countries, sectors and disciplines • Innovative doctoral programme: international, interdisciplinary, intersectoral • The network isinvolved in a joint programme (S&T, training) • The single participant recruits all fellows to carry out proposedwork and training • Equip doctoral candidates with innovative skills (scientific and transferable skills) • Quality of supervision of doctoral candidates

Initial Training Networks Associated European Industrial Doctorates (EID) • 2 participants (1 academic and 1 private) (“level 1”) from 2 different MS/AC • Associated partners from different countries, sectors and disciplines (“level 2”) • « Industry » = private sector • Each ESR must: • be enrolled in a doctoral programme • be employed by at least one of the participants • spend at least 50% of the time in private sector • be jointly supervised by both participants • Consortium agreement mandatory • Research institutes can be the academic partner IF associated with a university that will deliver the doctoral degree

ITN Objectives • Attract and train young people to become researchers • Promote researchers mobility across sectors, countries and disciplines • Equip researchers with a broad set of skills that will match both public and private sector needs • Improve career prospects of doctoral candidates (different sectors, transnationally) • Improve quality of doctoral training • Promote collaboration of academia and private sector in doctoral training

SoftSkills Engagement, Influence and Impact – including public engagement, enterprise, policy, knowledge transfer, communication, publications, grant writing, teaching and demonstrating, influence and leadership, people management Research Governance and Organisation– ethics, IPR, research strategy, project management, financial management Personal Effectiveness – career management, self-management, interpersonal qualities, professional responsibility Knowledge and Intellectual Abilities – creativity, subject knowledge and research methods
