  1. SFT in 2014strategic goals of the group for 2014John Harvey13th January 2014 finishing before 10.00

  2. News on personnel • Welcome to MihalyNOVAK as a new group member • new CERN fellow working in simulation • expert in simulation, in particular on low energy EM physics • David Smith from IT-SDC-ID will participate in the ROOT project working on tasks related to I/O development. • the initial task is to build a remote file access test infrastructure • needed for integration testing. • Johannes Gutleber will not be joining us after all • he has been offered a position in DG unit working on the FCC (Future Circular Colliders) conceptual design studies

  3. SFT Organisation in 2014

  4. Priorities in 2014 • Assist experiments to prepare for data-taking in 2015 • integration and testing of new software releases • increase focus on user support + documentation • Continue campaigns to improve quality, performance, maintainability (short-term) • performance – use new techniques + new libraries (V) • code review – fix defects, cleanup code, documentation • simplification – remove redundant options, features, code • Continue R&D efforts (longer-term) • explore new approaches and technologies • expand contacts with other HEP groups and other scientific domains • join new activities : data preservation (workshop starting today) • look for new funding opportunities (Horizon 2020)

  5. Specific goals • ROOT: release of version 6 beta • full participation of the experiments was highly successful • review of requirements and priorities in June • early integration and validation by LHC teams before the release • consider as a useful model for the future • next step is to complete the ROOT 6 release • continue the weekly ROOT6 planning meetings with experiments • what is full scope of what we can put in the release? • Geant4: release of version 10 • thread-safe simulation engine supporting event-level parallelism is an important achievement • next step is to integrate and test together with the LHC experiment software frameworks in real applications • are experiments ready to participate in a regular Geant4 10 planning meeting?

  6. Specific goals • CernVM • wide deployment of FS on grid sites; used by all 4 LHC experiments • mCernVM, VAF, PROOF-lite ready • how do we intend to promote their use in 2014? • Concurrency R&D • Concurrency Forum very active – good collaborative spirit • Geant-V and Gaudi Hive development projects making progress, limited only by the effort available • can we define some milestones to measure progress? • Meta libm project approved – kick-off meeting next week • can we keep a record of our tasks and milestones in JIRA?

  7. Specific goals • Tools – continue to look for synergies between different software activities (internal/external to SFT) • Savannah to Jira migration – what is reasonable new deadline for completion ? • CMake – can we expand its use (LCG builds, ..)? • Electric Commander – study possible replacements? • Drupal – migration to new SFT web • improve availability and visibility of information (tutorials, …) • Coverity – no change • New tools - ? • assist external groups in their use of tools (expecting a request) • …..

  8. Specific goals • ROOT Users’ workshop and G4 Technical Fora • follow-up feedback & new requests • add tasks in the plan • CF workshop will take place at CERN (April 1-4) • important milestone in the plan • Training material • In 2013 a big effort went into creating new material • ROOT Tutorial in Belgium; CernVM/ROOT/PROOF for EPlanet, CSC • New training activities in 2014: CSC, EPlanet • anticipate further updates

  9. Steps towards finalizing work programme • We should discuss in coming group meetings • Libraries and frameworks (Pere) : 27th January • Simulation (Federico) : 3rd February • Systems (Gerri) : 10th February • Service Tasks (Benedikt) : tbd • As in 2013, please enter the work programme into JIRA • Discuss with the experiment contacts at all levels • all together in an AF meeting (February 13? March 13?) • Use as the basis for defining ‘Objectives’ during the annual interviews • deadline for interviews to be completed is March 15th • service work done by each group member to be recognised when making Mars assessments • encourage more contributions if appropriate

  10. New Initiative - Software Collaboration • Brainstorming discussions took place in December • Sergio B., Ian B., Frederic H. all involved • Collaborate to ensure resources and expertise for the future • provide roadmaps for investigating new technologies & approaches • network with other scientific disciplines and industry • Goal is to engage whole software community in a coherent programme of development work • interoperable software packages • toolkits & frameworks to assist application building (G4, Gaudi) • dataflow and workflow management tools • Other benefits • foster commonality, ease maintenance • establish team of experts to give practical help to users of software

  11. New Initiative - Software Collaboration • Formal collaboration with an agreed governance model • has worked successfully in other domains (WLCG) • equal partners who all can receive recognition • can provide a framework for elaborating proposals for acquiring resources • EU – Horizon 2020 • US - NSF/DOE (increase scope of core software activities) • Organise activities in work packages • R&D studies • development infrastructure (tools etc.) • computing infrastructure (TechLab) • task forces to assist collaborations in ‘software campaigns’ • Considered a logical follow-up to the Concurrency Forum

  12. New Initiative - Software Collaboration • Next step is to discuss with partners in other HEP labs with core software teams • face to face if possible (Fermilab/Federico, Japan/Gabriele, …) • inviting comments, suggestions and to share ownership of initiative • If feedback is positive, organise a 1-2 day meeting to discuss details • best option is to attach meeting to the Concurrency Forum Workshop (April 1-3 > April 1-4) • Ulla reserving the IT auditorium for the whole of that week • Suggestion to hold follow-up meeting in US later in year • finalise governance model • possibly invite US funding agencies to send representatives

  13. Horizon 2020 • Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation framework programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) • Work programme with calls for proposals for 2014 and 2015 published • will circulate or post this after the meeting • Relevance for us? • Presentation in this week’s TL meeting: Agnes Szeberenyi • Jan 2015: E-INFRA-5-2015 • Centres of excellence for Computing Applications

  14. Meetings in coming months • January 13/14 – Data Preservation workshop (Today!) • venue IT auditorium - see agenda • tomorrow “Migration vs Emulation” Pere, Predrag, Jakob, Gerri • January 13/17 – Germany at CERN • Talk to transtec - please let me know who • January 20/24 – Geant V meeting in Fermilab (FC, SW, JA) • January 21 – HEPMC mini workshop • January 22 – First Meta libm project meeting in Lyon • February 3/4 - ESIPAP instrumentation school (Archamps) • 4x1.5 h lectures on how to use Geant4 • February 17 – AIDA meeting on Horizon 2020 • March 18/19 - LPCC workshop on Simulation Validation • NB: preparatory meeting this Wednesday – are we ready for this?

  15. Deadlines • TSC committee – deadline January 20th • Federico – DS candidate : Oksana Shadura • Gabriele – Michael Schenk (former summer student) TS? • tCSC2014 : 16-20 June 2014 in Split, Croatia • registration deadline Jan 31st • Cristina and Johannes expressed interest • CSC2014?
