  1. Information Management Working Group AGENDA • Review of progress on current web-based products and near-term planned products. • Review of data accessibility and identification of additional needs. • Development of data standards • a. QA/QC • - Identification of variable(s) to address, and discussion on • whether addressed at regional or provider level. • - Flagging techniques, including discussion of standards and • procedures to use for assessments • - Uploading and display of QA/QC information • - Aggregation process for QA/QC information • - QA/QC proposal to NDBC – progress? • b. Other standards development issues • - Discussion of other standards development groups and how to build interactions • Redundancy, backups, and data archival: review of progress and needs • Information management workshop planning (SECOORA-funded initiative): • - Status of spring workshop planning • - Recap of planned workshops to attend • - Process for documenting and sharing outcome of workshops Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  2. Information Management Working Group • Moving through Year 4 into Year 5 involves: • Development of data standards • Redundancy, backups, and data archival • Documentation • Information management workshop planning (SECOORA-funded initiative) • National involvement Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  3. Development of data standards • Focus (initially) on winds and SST • Provide QC tests and two sets of QC flags for each variable in • SEACOOS netCDF format to be ingested by the SEACOOS • scout. • Each partner to test: • Instrument ranges • Rule of thumb (gross ranges and climatological ranges) • Is data there? • Time continuity (long enough, so do not throw out wind • changes) • NOTE: QARTOD does not have specific tests defined for winds but • we can use whatever recommendations that they have thus • far for CTDs to assist us with these checks for SST as we • move forward. Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  4. Development of data standards • Two different QC flags: • Flags that describe good bad or quality confidence to follow QARTOD flagging recommendations • Flags that define what specific tests passed/not passed, using lower four bits for the four tests (0 is good, 1 is bad) Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  5. Development of data standards • Specific tasks and dates: • Obtain checks and instrument ranges from QARTOD for temperature. (Vembu, end of Nov) • Find out from QARTOD, what warrants a yellow or suspect flag.(Sara, end of Nov) • Review SEACOOS netCDF strawman. (All, Dec 1) • Propose any changes by submitting CDL examples.(All, Dec 1) • Adopt CDL (if only 1) or let's vote (if >1 CDL example)(All, Dec 15) • Implement in partner latest data. (each partner, try for Feb 1) • Implement aggregation and display capability in MapServer.(USC and UNC, ??) • Evaluate of different flagging techniques on number and quantity of data displayed. (Who?, by when?) Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  6. Redundancy, backups, and data archival • This is a SEACOOS / SECOORA (?) issue and not just a • DMCC issue! • Documentation will support business plan and System • Engineering Management Plan • We need redundancy in all aspects of IT and IM • Minimally-funded efforts are underway to mirror some • of the core SEACOOS scout functions • Efforts are underway to complete a comprehensive • analysis of what is needed and what it will cost Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  7. Documentation • Technical • Already being done • Provides internal guidance as personnel may change • Provides guidance to other RAs,sub-regional systems and OceanUS DMAC • Dissemination via twikis and white papers • Business Plan / System Engineering Management Plan • Supports budget development • Discusses in less technical terms • System implementation, management and • maintenance • QA/QC • Archival Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  8. Information management workshop planning • Purpose is to promote longitudinal data integration in • support of coastal, marine and ocean management • To be held in Chapel Hill during 9-10 March 2006 • Target audiences include IT and E&E folks from COOS, • and data collectors and users from Federal, state and • local programs • Support provided by SECOORA Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC

  9. National involvement • Number of (seemingly non-coordinated) activities: • OceanUS DMAC Steering Team Expert Teams • COTS/ONR • QARTOD • Marine Metadata Initiative • Salinity Slim • RA efforts • Vocal SEACOOS DMCC involvement in as many of these • efforts as possible Information Management Working Group 15-16 November 2005 Columbia, SC
