  1. ENGL 2307 8 April 2014

  2. This Week • Tuesday: • Overview of final essay • Discussion of Informal Writing • Analyzing film • Thursday: • Informal Writing due • Should have viewed The Haunting (2+ times, if possible) • Be prepared to discuss the adaptation

  3. Final Essay • Focus on adaptation • Still meaning based • Two texts make the same meaning in a different way • Two texts make a different meaning in the same way • Two texts make different meanings in different ways • Write about: • The Turn of the Screw/Maybe This Time • The Haunting of Hill House/The Haunting • “The Tell Tale Heart”/The Tell Tale Heart • Draft of 1000 words with one source • Final with 1500 words and TWO sources

  4. Final Draft: Sample thesis • “A Jury of Her Peers” presents a clearly unified group of women who protect Mrs. Wright after she murders her husband, while Trifles makes this more ambiguous. The later short story highlights the complicated gender relations at work in the small town. • Both “A Jury of Her Peers” and Trifles use bird imagery to align Mrs. Wright to the trapped and ultimately killed bird that spurs her murder of her husband and show the deadly nature of psychological abuse.

  5. Final Essay Due Dates • Summary of source due 4/17 • Those who turned it in for the Midterm do not have to turn one in. • If you had source trouble with the Midterm, meet with me during office hours. • Draft due 4/22 • Peer Review 5/6 • Final due 5/9 (final exam period)

  6. Informal Writing • In a 500 word essay, please answer one of the following questions. • 1.) Choose a character (other than the Dudleys) and examine how that person is characterized in The Haunting. How does that characterization differ from The Haunting of Hill House? What is the significance? • 2.) How does the haunting function (think in terms of the haunter, the haunted, the haunting, and the laying of the ghost) in the movie? What significance does the haunting have? • 3.) Examine the differences between the depiction of motherhood in the novel and the movie. What is the significance of the differences?

  7. Film Terms • Blocking–placement of parts of a scene • Close-up—shot with a small frame, little or no background shown • Cut—change in camera angle or placement, location, or time to indicate the end of a scene • Establishing shot—first shot of scene; provides context • Medium Shot—wider than a close up, shows some background • Pan—rotating camera • Reverse Shot/Angle—120/180 degrees different than previous shot • Sound track—dialogue, sound effects, music (we will discuss each separately to avoid confusion) • Soundtrack--music • Wide shot—lots of background, tiny subjects

  8. Examples • Darcy’s Proposal—Pride and Prejudice • http://youtu.be/BJX5_rj2lZg • “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”—Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid • http://youtu.be/EEo8obsERSQ • Opening Scene—Children of Men • http://youtu.be/wCTgUq6hzUk

  9. In Class Writing • Thinking back to the BMW Star video, consider how the music, sound effects, and camera work created meaning in the text. How do these effect our overall understanding of the video?

  10. Thursday • Be prepared to discuss: • Film elements of The Haunting • Specific scenes, including the carousel scene, the fountain scene, and the ending • Film as adaptation of the novel
