  2. Announcements • Guest Lecturer: Ms. Monica Montelongo • Ms. Bistline’s office hours are cancelled today. • They will be at the regular time on Monday. • Remember that you should have The Haunting of Hill House read by Tuesday. • You also have an Informal Writing due Tuesday.

  3. Informal Writing • Is this a haunting or a haunted house story? What is the distinction? How does reading it one way or the other affect the meaning of the text? • Choose a character. Examine how he/she is characterized. How does this affect the meaning of the text? • Examine the setting of the novel. How does this affect the meaning of the text?

  4. In Class Writing • You will need to turn this in after it is completed. • Explain the timeline of the story. How does it affect the story?

Randall Kenan • He was born in Brooklyn, but he grew up in North Carolina. • He received his BA from the University of North Carolina, where he currently teaches. • The collection of short stories that “Tell Me, Tell Me” comes from is his second book. • He has won a variety of awards for his work.

  7. Setting • When does this story seem to take place? What are our clues? • What effect does the time period have on our understanding of the story? • Does the place affect our reading?

  8. Narrator and Characters • What type of narrator do we have? How does that affect the story? • Who are the main characters that we see? • What do we know about them? How do we get that information? • How do we feel about Ida? Do we sympathize with her? Why or why not?

  9. Cell Phone Quiz • Who is haunting whom and why? • What has made the haunted susceptible to the haunting? • How is the haunting depicted? Is it scary for the reader? Why or why not? • What is Ida’s relationship with Joe Abner?
