Overview Why did the LLDA happen? Who was involved? What happened? What difference does the LLDA make?
Some facts - London’s libraries • 400 public libraries, 30 mobiles, 1,500 service points • 17 million books, 2 million audio and video recordings • 50.5 million visits • 42 million loans, 10 million enquiries • all for £23 per head per annum
But … • low profile • not networked with each other - or anyone else • internally focussed • duplication of effort
The solution A co-ordinated strategic vision for library and information services across London An agency to develop and implement the vision: • represent libraries • stimulate co-operation • enhance existing resources
Who was involved? • ALG (Elected Members from all parties) • professional network for local authority libraries and others • DCMS • British Library • London Arts
What happened? From • a vision and concept • £3,000 per Borough • and a Director to …
And now • an established and nationally recognised development agency • a manifesto for London’s libraries • a ferocious network of partners • a real track record of innovation, risk … and delivery
What difference does the LLDA make? • one way in to London’s libraries • a partnership-brokering service • libraries “at the table” for the first time … • combined with a locally autonomous approach to actual service delivery • £5 for every £1 invested = £2.5 million
What difference does the LLDA make - nationally & regionally? • Access - Libraries & Learners in London • Diversity - Welcome to your library • Innovation - Young Cultural Creators • Profile-raising & partnerships - Londoners Need to Read • Marketing - What’s in London’s libraries
What difference does the LLDA make - locally? • Barking & Dagenham - Central Library development • Barnet - LSC North bid • Greenwich -diversity development • Harrow - Legal Services Commission partnership • Havering - cultural change programme • Islington - community regeneration advocacy • Kensington & Chelsea - London Development Agency bid • Tower Hamlets - Idea Store programme
Why has it worked? • focuses on the core product • forges new networks & partnerships • development only - others deliver services • challenges - and supports • lean & flexible
