  5. MEITS Multilingualism: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies research initiative is currently launching WAM (We are multilingual)

  6. Inspiring everyone to say: ”We are multilingual” We believe all school language learners are multilingual – they have one or more home languages, are learning a language in school, many of us have a dialect, can read emoji, use sign language, slang, or use a range of other ways of communicating! Our research in schools in the East of England and London suggests that students who develop a stronger multilingual identity: Have more positive views about the value of languages Report higher enjoyment of language learning Have greater belief in their own ability to do well in learning a language learning Are more likely to decide to carry onstudying languages WAM is a series of free materials, designed with the aim to inspire language learners, to encourage them to say “we are multilingual” and help change attitudes towards language learning.

  7. The materials we have designed are in packs of 8 free-standing lessons, available for French, German and Spanish. They can be used with students in any year group and can be adapted for any level.   Each language pack includes: 8 Powerpoints including audio and video clips accompanying Teachers’ notes with suggested classroom language, timings, and pupil tasks student worksheets / templates Unit topics explore themes such as: Am I multilingual? Languages in my school, community and the world around me Language and culture Why learn languages? Making our school more multilingual “It was a really great project that led to really interesting discussion” (Teacher, London)

French Pop Video Competition 2019 Regional qualification results All the regional video entries qualified for the national final are now available on the Francophonie UK YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlistlist=PLE5zV1eHIMCM2cY0-J_v-u4vAA3utkg56 The national finals are scheduled in early June.

  12. Annual French and German debates • Between October 2018 and March 2019 Y12 students from sixteen schools took part in a debating competition organised by the Goethe-Institut London. The teams dealt with current questions about the future of Europe.A year abroad in Europe should be compulsory during school time.The use of plastic should be banned in Europe.Only electric cars should be allowed in Europe from 2025.At the final, held at the British Council in the presence of the general secretary of the Goethe-Institut, Johannes Ebert, Dr. Challoner's Grammar School and Hampton School debated the pros and cons of the thesis: The subject “Europe” should be introduced in schools.Both teams impressed the jury and the audience with their strong arguments and counter-arguments with Dr. Challoner’s Grammar eventually brought the trophy home. • Congratulations to all of the teams and their teachers for their impressive performances and their enthusiasm for German! • https://www.goethe.de/ins/gb/en/spr/mag/21268326.html

Annual French and German debates The 2019 Joutesoratoireslycéennesorganised by the Institutfrançais were won by King's School Wimbledon, followed by Perse Upper, St Paul's Girls' School, and Hills Road Sixth Form College. Schools interested in taking part in the 2019-2020 edition and who would like to register for their regional contest, or organise their own regional contest, are invited to express their interest by writing to Helène May at helene.may@spgs.org

LW highlight: New OFSTED Handbook … • Quality of education brings together the previous measures of teaching, learning and assessment.‘ This will focus on a provider’s educational intent, implementation and impact. It will de-intensify the inspection focus on performance data and place more emphasis on the substance of education and what matters most to learners and practitioners.’

  20. Who / What? • Intent is in the remit of the senior and subject leaders; • Implementation is particularly for subject leaders and teachers - what they choose to do in the classroom; • Impact is what Inspectors see in the pupils and their work .

  21. Ambitious intent … to what extent … • Leaders adopt or construct a curriculum that is ambitious and designed to give all pupils the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. This is either the national curriculum or a curriculum of comparable breadth and ambition. • The school’s curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced • Pupils study the full curriculum. In primary schools, a broad range of subjects (exemplified by the national curriculum) is taught in key stage 2 throughout each and all of Years 3 to 6. In secondary schools, the school teaches a broad range of subjects throughout Years 7 to 9.

  22. In the classroom • Remember the Programme of Study when you plan • Create a Scheme of Work that builds on previous learning .. and builds upwards • Make the links • Check that new language ‘sticks’
