  2. Objectives By the end of the session the student will: • Be aware of the changes in resuscitation. guidelines. • Be competent in BLS in adult / child & infant. • Be able to place a victim in recovery position. • Be competent in the action for vomit. • Be competent in the treatment of choking in adult / child & infant.

  3. Main Changes • Diagnose cardiac arrest if unresponsive and not breathing normally. • Place hands in the centre of the chest. • Rescue breath over 1 sec rather than 2 sec. • Ratio of compressions to ventilations 30:2 for all adult victims of sudden cardiac arrest. • Use this same ratio for children when attended by a lay rescuer. • Adult, omit the initial 2 rescue breaths - 30 compressions immediately after cardiac arrest is diagnosed.

  4. Response – “Are you all right?” Danger Shout Airway – Head Tilt / Chin Lift Breathing No more than 10seconds! 999 Compressions – “Centre of chest” 30:2 4-5cm @ 100/min !Different people are different sizes!

  5. Compressions • Centre of chest • Middle of lower half of sternum • Compression only CPR  • “Over the Head”  • 2 person – swap at 2min intervals

  6. Time For Practice

  7. Recovery Position • Stable • No weight on Chest • Position head so fluid can drain away “Re-assess”

  8. Time For Practice

  9. Action for Vomit 1. Grip the chin securely and position the forearm along the centre of the chest, ensure your hand doesn’t obstruct the airway. 2. Lift the shoulder and roll casualty away from you. 3. Use your knees to provide support on the casualties back & use your free hand to support the head. 4. Caution: Casualty may retch - so maintain firm grip on head.

  14. Child / Infant Resuscitation
