  3. NNPTC History • Clinical Training Centers first funded in 1979 • Behavioral Interventions Training Centers & Partner Services Training Centers established in 1995

  4. NNPTC Goals • Address the STD/HIV prevention training needs of public & private sector health professionals throughout the US • Develop, deliver, & evaluate training activities on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of STDs & HIV

  7. NNPTC Training ActivitiesApril 1, 2006 – March 31, 2007 • 32,414 students • 12,895 course hours provided • 5,789 didactic hours (45%) • 7,106 experiential hours (55%) • 1,010 training events

  8. Types Of Students • 8,769 registered students* • 67% devoted the majority of their time to STD/HIV diagnosis, counseling and care • 58% from CBOs, publicly-funded health programs, corrections facilities, Migrant health clinics and Indian Health Service *does not include online participants

Clinical & Laboratory Training • 2-3 Centers in each geographic quadrant • Eastern Quadrant: MA, NY, & MD • Southern Quadrant: AL & FL • Central Quadrant: OH, MO, & CO • Western Quadrant: CA & WA • Provide didactic & experiential training in STD diagnostics, treatment & management • Focus on clinicians in public & private practice

Ask Screen Intervene (ASI)Curriculum • Supports the CDC/HRSA/IDSA Recommendations for Incorporating HIV Prevention into the Medical Care of Persons Living with HIV • Developed by the NNPTC in collaboration with the AETCs & the AETC National Resource Center • Targeted to clinicians caring for HIV-positive patients

  17. Ask, Screen, Intervene Curriculum • Module 1: Risk Screening for Behavioral Risks and STDs • Module 2: Universal Prevention Messages & Addressing Misconceptions • Module 3: Tailored Behavioral Interventions • Module 4: Partner Services

Partnership for HealthCurriculum • Based on research study conducted by Keck School of Medicine, USC • Developed by the Behavioral Interventions PTCs in collaboration with the AETCs • Designed to improve patient-provider communication about safer sex, disclosure of HIV serostatus, and HIV prevention

Partnership for HealthThe Action of One, The Partnership of Two, The Power of Many • Intervention: • Initiate a three-five minute interaction with patients that emphasizes the importance of • Self Protection • Partner Protection • Disclosure • Reinforcement at return clinic visits • Course targeted to: • health care providers who work with HIV + patients in clinical settings • HIV clinics, STD clinics, substance use treatment center clinics, criminal justice clinics

  20. Capacity Assessment • Purpose: Determine current capacity of HIV Programs to provide Partner Counseling and Referral Services (PCRS) • Methods: • Key Informant Interviews • Survey • Deliverables: Draft report to CDC to be used in determining future TA and training needs

  21. Future Partner Services Activities • Integrate current STD (ISTDI) and HIV (PCRS) training • Modular format • Flexible delivery depending on discipline • STD Program Management course in development • Provide training and technical assistance
