Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. • Mt. 28:18-20: Christ affirmed His authority • He has all authority in heaven and earth. • His authority over all men is seen in His command to baptize them & to continue teaching them (Mk. 16:15-16: authority to save and condemn!). • His authority continues for all time, until the end of time. • 05/19/13: Elders at the Heritage church of Christ • (Ft. Worth, TX) announced they were allowing • instrumental music • Made announcement on their website • Released a 7-page Q&A document justifying their decisions Intro Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  3. Eph. 5:19 19. speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; Col. 3:16 (NKJ) 16. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. • Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16 • Saints are commanded to sing, making melody from the heart and singing with “thanksgiving” (NKJ: “Grace”), from charis (G5485): gratitude, graciousness (Thayer). Intro It is important to establish by whose authority the church operates under today! Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  4. II Jn. 9 9. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. • Many answers are given: • Through Pope, Council, Creed, Denomination, Dream, Emotion, Etc. • The authority of Christ is expressed only thru Scriptures: • Christ promised to reveal “all truth” to & through His Apostles (Jn. 16:13). • We are to speak “the same thing” (I Cor. 1:10; 2:13; 4:6) • The gospel was given by the authority of Christ (Gal. 1:8-9). • To abide in the teaching of Christ is to abide in His authority (II Jn. 9). • To abide under the authority of Christ, we must exercise our faith in “the faith” (Jude 3). Where Do We Find the Authority of Christ? The authority of Christ was revealed in God’s word and will endure to the last day! (Jn. 12:48) Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  5. “How Do Ordinary Words Communicate?” • Communication uses two kinds of terms: • We use generalterms: “Go” in Mk. 16:15; We may ask for “food” • We use specificterms: “First day of the week” in Acts 20:7; We may ask for “steak” • Communication may be expressed in three ways: • Direct statement or command (Mk. 16:16) • Approved example (Acts 20:7) • Necessary implication (Mt. 3:16) How Does the Bible Teach? Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  6. Acts 15:24 (NKJ) 24. Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, “You must be circumcised and keep the law”—to whom we gave no such commandment— • By Christ's authority, the apostles answered the question: • “What Is Necessary for Salvation: the Gospel of Christ or • the Law of Moses?” • Acts 15:7-11: Peter taught by necessary implication that the day of salvation through the gospel includes the Gentiles as well as the Jews. • Acts 15:12: Paul appealed to approved example: The miracles he performed showed God's approval of his example of preaching the gospel to Gentiles (Heb. 2:4). • Acts 15:13-18: James taught by quoting a direct statement promising salvation to both Jew & Gentile through the gospel (Amos 9:11-12). How Does the Bible Teach? When we teach or preach we must speak the “utterances” (NKJ: “oracles”) of God! (I Pet. 4:11) Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  7. Lev. 10:1-3 1. Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2. And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. 3. Then Moses said to Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'" So Aaron, therefore, kept silent. • God gave instructions on worship to His people in the • Patriarchal Age • Gen. 4:4; Gen. 4:3-7 Does God Really Care How We Worship? • God gave instructions on worship to His people in the • Mosaic Age • Ex. 25:8-9; II Chr. 29:25; Lev. 10:1-3 Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  8. Heb. 7:12 12. For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also. • God gave instructions on worship to His people in the • Gospel Age • Christ ordained the Lord's Supper (Mt. 26:26-29; Acts 20:7) • We are commanded to give as we prosper (I Cor. 16:1-2; II Cor. 9:7). • We must preach and teach God's Word (I Tim. 3:15; II Tim. 4:2). • God's people were taught to pray (Acts 2:42; Eph. 6:18; I Thess. 5:17). • We are to sing in worship (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; Heb. 13:15). • Rev. 22:18-19: Forbidden to add to or to subtract from the Word of God Does God Really Care How We Worship? God has always cared how His People worship Him – pleasing and not pleasing! Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established

  9. Saints must be careful not to take the “liberty” of the • gospel as license to worship God how we please! • Col. 1:18: Christ is the Head of the church! Not any man! • Js. 1:25: The “law of liberty” must be adhered to (“abides by it”) – • Jn. 8:31 • Js. 2:12: The “law of liberty” judges! • I Pet. 2:16: Freedom in Christ does not mean freedom from law! Saints ought to recognize and revere the authority of Christ over the church (Eph. 5:23) because He is the Savior of the body! Conclusion Let us use our freedoms to the glory of Christ as we worship God in spirit and truth! (Jn. 4:24) Melody Of The Heart Pt. 1: Authority Established
