  2. Religion • Christians believed the Bible was inspired by God so everything in it is true. • Christians believed God made the world and all its life forms, including humans in six days.

  3. Religion • They rejected the Charles Darwin theory. • They felt that evolution would cause dangerous social movements.

  4. Religion • Preacher led religious revivals based on the authority of the scriptures. Which rose against science.

  5. science • Charles Darwin was a naturalist and geologist best known for his evolutionary theory. From 1809-1882 he lived exploring the science of life • Darwin’s theory stated that plants and animals had developed over millions of years, to create life instead of God.

  6. science • Darwin’s 5 theories are; • Evolution – Species come and go through time, while they exist they change • Common decent – Organisms are descended from one or several common ancestors and have changed from the original.

  7. science • Species Multiply- Diversification of life involves groups from one species changing until they become two separate species; this has probably occurred billions of times on earth • Gradualism- Evolutionary change occurs through very small changes within populations; new species are not created suddenly • Natural Selection- Evolutionary change occurs through variation between individuals; some variants give the individual an extra chance of survival.

  8. The scopes trial • The Scopes Trial is also known as monkey trial • In March, 1925. TN passed nations first law for it to be illegal to teach about evolution.

  10. Bryan is one the left in the picture The scopes trial • The state attorney was William Jennings Bryan he was a Christian and believed evolution theories led to dangerous social movements. • Bryan was aware of serious difficulties with Darwinism and lack of scientific support

The scopes trial • This trial was considered the “test case” for attacking the new law by including evolution in his curriculum. • Darrow changed his clients plead to guilty and scopes was convicted and charged with a fine of $100 • 1967 the supreme court struck down the TN anti- evolution law for violating the constitutions law of separation of church and state.
