  7. ALZHEIMERS BEGINS IN CHILDHOOD

  8. FEEDING THE BRAIN • Brain cell mitochondria • Brain cell membrane • Neuronal mylin formation • Neurotransmitter function

  9. FEEDING THE BRAIN • Brain utilizes 25% food energy • Utilizes 25% of 02 • Brain: 1-2% of body weight • 60% fat: “fat head” • Does not store glucose • Brain most affected by nutrition

  10. Salmon Blueberries Greens: spinach Nuts: walnuts BEST BRAIN FOODS

  11. CHANGE YOUR OILS • Brain health = control inflammation • O3’s anti-inflammatory: teflon endothelium • O6’s pro-inflammatory: velcro endothelium • Omega 6 / Omega 3; AA/EPA 2:1 SAD 20:1 • Smart oils: fish, flax, nut, olive • Dumb oils: hydrogenated, excess vegetable oil

  12. MY FAVORITE FISH STORY

  13. WHAT ARE OMEGA 3’S? • Omega-3s are essential fatty acids found in fish & certain plant oils • Your body cannot produce Omega-3 fatty acids on its own • At all stages of life, Omega-3 fatty acids are required to ensure overall health and well-being EPA DHA

  14. OMEGA-3 INCLUDES: ALAAlpha-linolenic Acid Primarily from flax (18 carbons) EPAEicosapentaenoic Acid Primarily from fish (20 carbons) DHADocosahexaenoic Acid Primarily from fish (22 carbons) } EPA and DHA are the key Omega-3 for good heart health & normal growth and development

  15. FISH OIL: THE BEST SOURCE OF OMEGA-3 Only fish oil contains both EPA and DHA. These are the vital forms of Omega-3 that support overall good health. Omega-3 EPA and DHA are readily found in oily fish such as sardines and anchovies. Plant sources of Omega-3, such as flax and canola oil, contain ALA but your body needs to convert ALA to EPA and DHA to derive the maximum health benefits. This conversion is extremely inefficient.

  16. WHY EPA/DHA IS THE BEST SOURCE OF OMEGA-3 • EPA/DHA may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and have an FDA qualified heart health claim. • EPA/DHA have scientifically proven health benefits that are supported by over 14,000 scientific papers, 8000 of which are human clinical studies. • EPA/DHA are backed by established and emerging evidence suggesting improvements in inflammatory conditions including arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. • EPA/DHA play a role in brain development and function as well as visual acuity.

  17. SUPPORT OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF OMEGA-3 Health professionals and major health organizations around the world endorse Omega-3 as being essential for overall good health. • American Heart Association (AHA) • British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) • Health Canada • Institute of Medicine (IOM) • International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids & Lipids (ISSFAL) • National Heart Foundation of Australia (NHFA) • World Health Organization (WHO)

  18. RECOMMENDED DAILY INTAKE OF OMEGA-3 EPA/DHA 1 • On average, North Americans consumeonly 150mg/day of Omega-3 EPA/DHA.2 • Europeans consume 300mg/day.3 • Meanwhile, Japanese who have the lowest rate of cardiovascular disease deaths, consume over 700mg/day. 3 1. AHA and ISSFAL 2. Kris-Etherton, et al. Am J Clin Nutr 2000;71(suppl):179s-88s. 3. Hibbeln. J Affect Disorders 2002;69(1-3):15-29.

  19. DIETARY DEFICIENCY IN EPA/DHA ISSFAL and AHA

  20. OMEGA-3: HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH? “Do you eat at least two 4oz. servings of oily fish per week? If your answer is no, you are not getting your recommended daily intake of Omega-3… according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.”

  21. OMEGA-3 EPA/DHA BENEFITS

  22. Prenatal:Increased brain functionIncreased visual activity Lactation and Formula:Increased cognitive functionIncreased visual activity Childhood:Decreased learning, behavior and mood disorder Adulthood:Decreased cognitive declineDecreased CVCDecreased “it is” illnesses OMEGA-3’s: THE NUTRIENT FOR ALL AGES

  23. FEEDING BABY BRAINS • Breastfeeding: intellectual advantage • Dose-related effect • DHA – enriched infant formulas • Increased cognitive performances • Increased visual acuity

  24. Brain Development: Helland IQ StudyHelland, et al., Pediatrics 2003;111;39-44. Supplementation: Cod liver oil Group: 1183mg/10mL DHA; 803mg/10mL EPA Corn oil Group: 4747mg/10mL Linoleic Acid; 92mg/10mL ALA • Amounts of fat soluble vitamins were identical Duration: • Pregnant women were supplemented from week 18 of their pregnancies to 3 months post-delivery Results: • Children whose mothers received EPA and DHA supplementation scored significantly higher on the Mental Processing Composite of the K-ABC at 4 years of age than those whose mothers received corn oil. Conclusion: “This study indicates that maternal supplementation with very-long-chain n-3 PUFAs during pregnancy and lactation improves the intelligence of children at 4 years of age.”

  25. The Oxford-Durham Study:Dietary Supplementation with Fatty Acids in Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)Richardson, AP and P. Montgomery Pediatrics, 2005. 115(5): p. 1360-6. Daily Dosage vs. Placebo: • 558mg of EPA, 174mg of DHA, 60mg of -linoleic acid, 9.6mg of vitamin E (natural form, -tocopherol) Duration: 3 months Sample Size: 117 children with DCD Results: • Reading: +9.5 Months (vs. 3.3 for placebo) • Spelling: +6.5 Months (vs. 1.2 for placebo) Note: After 3 month study, children on placebo were given supplement and gained 13.5 months reading & 6 months spelling within 3 months

  26. Before OXFORD DURHAM STUDY:WRITING SAMPLE After Richardson, AP and P. MontgomeryPediatrics, 2005. 115(5): p. 1360-6.

  27. BIG IMPROVEMENT IN ADHD “Food affects behavior …” -Dr. A. Richardson Richardson, AP and P. MontgomeryPediatrics, 2005. 115(5): p. 1360-6.

  28. GO FISH, BEHAVE BETTER • Boys with most severe ADHD lowest O-3’s • 96 boys with ADHD greatest impulsivity lowest O-3’s • Children with highest O-3, fewest learning problems • Japanese students less hostility and stress during exams • Increase dopamine and receptors

  29. GO FISH, BE SMARTER • Medicine meal • Help cells maintain their fluidity • Form the structural component of membranes • Enable optimal function of neurotransmitters • Diets high in Omega-3’s: less CNS degeneration • Seniors who eat the most fish, least mental decline

  30. GO FISH, BE HAPPIER • Omega 3’s as mood stabilizer • Diets low in Omega 3, higher depression • Salmon study • Animal studies Omega 3’s increased dopamine receptors Seafood for a “Happy Meal”

  31. EAT FISH STAY YOUNG

  32. A salmon a day can keep;the brain doctor away….the eye doctor away…the heart doctor away…the bone doctor away.
