  3. History and Government • For most of the last 100 years, Russia was apart of the USSR (Soviet Union) • Ruled by Communism • Challenged USA and other democracies worldwide

  6. Czar: ruler of Russia until 1917 revolution, originally from Latin word Caesar, title of Roman Emperor

  7. Russification: a government program that required everyone in the empire to speak Russian and to become Christian What do you think the goal of Russification was?

  8. Satellite: a country controlled by another country

  9. Perestroika:“restructuring”; part of Gorbachev’s plan for reforming the Soviet economy and government

  10. Black Market:illegal trade of scarce or illegal goods, usually sold at high prices

  11. Privatization:a change to private ownership of state owned companies and industries

  12. The Fall of the Soviet Union

  13. Timeline Activity Create a time line to sequence of the most important events in Russia’s history. (Ten dates) Search the internet or your textbook to add additional facts about each period on your time lines. Example of time line on page 342 (do don’t use those dates).
