  1. Good Morning! • Please have the following on your desk • Homework • Homework log • Warm-Up • Colored pen • INB • Pencil • White board • Whiteboard marker • Complete warm-up 2-2 • Set up your interactive notebook for today’s lesson

  2. YESTERDAY’S LESSON! Left side time! What I learned: write 1-2 sentences about what you learned. Proof: What's the Error? At 9 AM the outside temperature was -3˚ F. By noon it was -12˚F. A newscaster said that it was getting warmer outside. Why is this incorrect? Reflection: Give an example in which a negative number has a greater absolute value than a positive number.

  3. 2-2 Adding Integers Objective: I can add integers. Now set up the left side of the page & complete: • Page number: • Lesson title: 2-2 Adding Integers • Learning goal: (write the objective in your own words) • What I know: (Write 1 or 2 sentences explaining what you already know about the lesson)

  4. California Standards NS2.3 Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems, including those arising in concrete situations, that use positive and negative integers and combinations of these operations. Also covered: AF1.2

  5. Why learn this? When you begin working you will earn money. You will be able to purchase items you want and need. Being able to fill out a bank ledger is very important. When solving real-world problems, you can add integers to determine if you have enough money to buy items you need.

  6. To add two integers with the same sign, find the sum of their absolute values. Use the sign of the two integers. To add two integers with different signs, find the difference of their absolute values. Use the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value.

  7. HELPFUL HINT!!! When adding integers, think: If the signs are the same, find the sum! If the signs are different, find the difference!

  8. –14 –12 –10 –8 –6 –4 –2 0 2 Additional Example 1A: Modeling Integer Addition Use a number line to find the sum. –7 + (–4) –7 +(–4) Start at 0. Move left 7 spaces. Then move left 4 more spaces. –7 + (–4) = –11

  9. –12 –10 –8 –6 –4 –2 0 2 4 6 8 Additional Example 1B: Modeling Integer Addition Use a number line to find the sum. –12 + 19 19 –12 Start at 0. Move left 12 spaces. Then move right 19 spaces. –12 + 19 = 7

  10. Helpful Hint When adding integers, think: if the signs are the same, find the sum. If the signs are different, find the difference. Additional Example 2A: Adding Integers Using Absolute Values Find the sum. –4 + 8 The signs are different. Find the difference of the absolute values. –4 + 8 Think: 8 – 4 = 4. Use the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value. 4

  11. Find the sum. Example 2B –5 + 3 The signs are different. Find the difference of the absolute values. –5 + 3 Think: 5 – 3 = 2. Use the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value. –2

  12. Example 3 Evaluate x + y for x = –24 and y = 17. x + y Substitute for –24 for x and 17 for y. The signs are different. Think: 24 – 17 = 7. –24 + 17 Use the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value (negative). –7

  13. –14 –12 –10 –8 –6 –4 –2 0 2 YOUR TURN! On your white board Use a number line to find the sum. 1. –7 + (–6) Find each sum. 2. –15 + 24 + (–9) 3. –24 + 7 + (–3) 4. Evaluate x + y for x = –2 and y = –15.

  14. A’s complete: #13 #21 #29 #32 Rally Coach! TB pg78 B’s complete: #14 #26 #30 #45

  15. Left side time! What I learned: write 1-2 sentences about what you learned. Proof: The math’s club income from a bake sale was $217. Advertising expenses were $32. Use integer addition to find the club’s total profit or loss. Reflection: Write about it. Compare the method used to add integers with the same sign and the method used to add integers with different signs.
