Ethernet • Ethernet is “baseband” or shared media • Only one station is allowed to be transmitting at any given time within a single collision domain • All stations are required to listen before they transmit • All stations are required to monitor their transmission to check for collisions • CSMA/CD

  8. Token Ring and FDDI • Communication is token-based • Each station condition/amplifies the token as it is passed • Typically, only one token is allowed per ring; however, there can be two (early release) • FDDI adds a second ring for fault tolerance

  9. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) • Encapsulates common protocols • Uses Virtual Path Identifiers (VPI) to create end-to-end connectivity • ATM uses a fixed cell size (48 bytes) for better Quality of Service (QoS) • Like combining Ethernet and IP

  10. 802.11 • 802.11 standard supports 3 physical layers: - Infrared - Radio Frequency - FHSS-Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum - DSSS-Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum • Branched into 802.lla, 802.llb, and 802.llg • 802.llb supports up to 11 Mbps at 2.4GHz • 802.lla supports up to 54 Mbps at 5GHz • 802.llg supports up to 54 Mbps at 2.4 GHz (new)
