Privacy Rule • Every health care provider must inform patients about how their info is used. • Patients must sign a consent form stating they were informed before they can be admitted. • If the info is to be given to another Dr, lawyer, family member, etc a release form must be signed • If it is an illness that puts others in danger it must be reported even if release is not signed

HIPAA allows you to… • See and obtain copies of your medical records • Know how providers will use your information • Set limits on how you want your info to be used • Ensure that info is kept confidential • State who has access to your info • File a complaint if someone does not keep that confidentiality
