  1. The Deity of Christ Explaining John 8:58

  2. I AM (Gr. egweimi) Q: why have the English translators capitalized the words "I AM"? The Greek manuscripts were written in uncials, where every word was capitalized! - John 8:58 (Gr)

  3. “I AM” – invoking the name of YHWH? Q: Was Jesus invoking the Tetragrammaton? Was he claiming to be YHWH, God of the OT? Many believe Jesus is citing Exo3:14 Eng: And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.‘” LXX: "καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν καὶ εἶπεν οὕτως ἐρεῖς τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ ὁ ὢν ἀπέσταλκέν με πρὸς ὑμᾶς"

  4. “egweimi o wn” – Exo 3:14 "egweimi o wn" - "I AM HE WHO IS" (properly translated) - not "I AM WHO I AM" "egweimi" - is a phrase of self-identification. Many say it in common everyday language, as many did in the bible. E.g., Joh 9:6 - 9 - Blind man Act 26:29 - Paul Both these men used the phrase "egweimi" and no-one claims that they were invoking the sacred name found in Exo3:14. No one would dare say that these men are God in the flesh - yet we say it with regards to Jesus!

  5. “o wn” – Exo 3:14 "o wn" - "HE WHO IS" (properly translated) - not "I AM" - this phrase expresses an ever present presence! The Tetragrammaton (YHWH) is expressed in the book of Revelation (by the Father) with "o wn" - never with "egweimi“ E.g. Rev 1:4 - 5, 1:8, 4:8, 11:17, 16:5 - "who is, who are" all in the Greek "o wn"!

  6. Jesus, John 8:58, I AM?? Q: What was Jesus really saying in John 8:58 with the "I AM" statement? A: Paraphrase: “I am greater than Abraham, even from before he was born..." Similar language is found with John the Baptist regarding Jesus... NAS John 1:30 "This is He on behalf of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’

  7. Jesus greater than Abraham? Q: in what sense is Jesus greater than Abraham?" [in foreknowledge/plan of God - from the beginning"] E.gJoh 17:5, 24 - from eternity past, God had loved Jesus (His son) and had exalted him to the high status of Messiah! (all in God's great plan) "...from the foundation of the world.." - from the beginning, what was decreed in God's plan! "...All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." - Rev 13:8 1 Pet 1:20 - Jesus, the Messiah, was foreknown by God from eternity past. Jesus was glorified as Messiah, king of kings from eternity! Jesus could speak of himself as "existing" (fig. sense) in the plan/mind/word of God from eternity and could proclaim himself greater than all prophets and fathers because it was already established in God's program. Jesus is God's Messiah, right hand man, the one and only representative of YHWH who now speaks in His stead with all His authority and power!

  8. Conclusion What is concluded? That the statement "I am" Jesus uttered was not, in any way, to be received as an expression of deity. Rather that he was answering the burning question - that he is greater than Abraham - even from before he was even created/brought into existence - for from eternity Jesus was already foreknown to be Messiah by the God the Father's purpose and plan. This does not mean Jesus/the Christ/the Son pre-existed ontologically in any way with the Father, but rather the Messiah's name, his lifestyle, works and future exalted status were already planned out by God in His divine wisdom.
