  2. Agenda • Benefits of training • Training staff • Training the public • Tips and online resources

  3. What many people believe… • Training is wasted time. • I know enough already. • This training won’t give me any recognizable benefit. • I’m retiring soon; I’m too old/specialized/technology-limited to learn this; this is over my head. • Training reveals how uninformed I am. • I can’t do this.

  4. Benefits of training • A stronger, more thoughtful staff • A more informed patronage • Sharing the wealth of knowledge • Inspiring cross training • Promoting life-long learning as a work-style • Libraries are learning organizations, and training is an opportunity, platform, and vehicle for learning. • Trainer as filter and expert. • Familiarity breeds competence. • http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/encyclopedia/Thir-Val/Training-and-Development.html#b

  5. On training staff • Group setting followed by supplemental, if necessary, one-on-one sessions • Go over the basics: • Registering ADE on a PC • Transferring e-content • Downloading the OverDrive Media Console App • Take advantage of Barnes & Noble for Nooks

  6. Training Staff • Document any troubleshooting or variances of devices and store them in an accessible area for all staff. • Have manuals available

  7. Resource for professionals who review books, i.e. publishers, librarians, reviewers, bloggers. • Allows users to receive advanced copies of ebooks. • http://www.netgalley.com/

  8. Net Galley

  9. Net Galley-Devices • http://www.netgalley.com/about/devices/ • PC you need ADE • iPad, you need Bluefire

  10. Training the Public • Workshops: • Be prepared for several types of eReaders. • Be aware of the various levels of comfort patrons have with regards to technology. • Offer handouts and links to information post class. • One-on-one training is a great way to follow up with patrons who are lacking confidence. • Request feedback from participants, e.g. survey.

  11. Training the Public • Must have each patron bring in their own device and laptop if they plan to download. • Stay with the basics; don’t overwhelm with too much detail. Image Source: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/NOOK-Bundle-NYT/379003397
